Yet another banding post!

I know I've asked a lot of banding questions, but I still have some more. This time it's about frequency. What is ok vs. what is too much. Raven is young (8 mo) and as such is quite active. He runs and jumps and rolls about every chance he gets. He also likes to fuss with the bands that are between his ears. That's the only section he has an issue with. Needless to say I end up redoing his bands every day, every other if I'm lucky. I feel like that's going to end up damaging his coat. I always cut his bands out, I mist him with PurePaws H2O spray, and when I brush I spray either PP's moisturizing shine stuff or Ice on Ice on each section. I think I'm going to cut out the PP's moisturizing shine stuff, I don't like it as well although its fine in a pinch. I only use a pin brush and comb. He gets conditioned with every bath. Any thoughts? I figure once he grows up this won't be an issue, but for now it is!

Eta: I also use very fine, soft bands. They break very little if any coat.

Sounds like you are doing it right. Sometimes you just have to fix them a lot. It's hard when they are new to it and notice them. Just need a little time and coat and they won't feel the bands or care as much (for most dogs, some are just tough) Conditioning and spraying is important and helps. I use motions oil when banding too. It keeps the hair nice and I believe more resistant to breakage. Super light spray and cheap at walmart.

Thanks y'all. :) I'll have to get some of the motions oils....is it their oil or leave in conditioner spray? I've used the spray before, but I don't know if I've seen the oil. Some other people I asked said to just band the front part of his tk, back to where his ears start, and leave his neck and backskull unbanded. Any thoughts on that? He does have a lot of breakage there, (as in its a bit shorter than the rest of his tk and mane) probably from rolling and playing with Trev. Which, btw, I try to limit wrestling and encourage them to play tug instead but you know how it is! Every now and then they wrestle.

Keep in mind he is a toy, their coats are waaaaay more delicate than a standard. There was a standard pup I was putting into a show puppy trim for a while, his coat got to be like 7" long or more by 7-8 mo. It was in perfect condition when I finally cut him down. No breakage or anything. This dog gets bathed once every 6 wks, no conditioner, no banding except for his eyes, nothing. His mom was combing him in between so he didn't mat. I was soooo envious. Raven is 8 mo, and barely has 4", 5 at the longest points. WHY?! I try so hard to be careful, don't let him play with the other dogs much, band him carefully, brush very gently, and bathe and condition weekly, or more right now because its so dry here. He is actually pretty decent about not scratching too much, and he doesn't rub too much either. Certainly less than most 8 mo! I guess he does it enough to break coat. Gah...I'm determined to figure this out. I have to admit, I was entertaining the idea of a modern trim last week. But I would be mad at myself if I did. Just gotta keep trying! I figure his adult coat will be easier to deal with.

I just don't understand why a dog who gets very little grooming and is just as active as mine can grow coat effortlessly. While my dog who gets worked on daily or every other day is struggling. His hair grows fast....I just can't seem to keep the length on his backskull and tk!

I tip his mane (literally tip, we are talking 1/8" of an inch or so) area once every 3-4 wks. should I up that? Maybe bi-weekly?

Thanks for listening. Once again, I'm having coat issues and its so frustrating and only you guys understand. :) Maybe it's my water....can water hardness affect the coat? Or maybe I'm just a drama queen and am overdoing it. Lol...my groomer friend laughed when she saw Trev's ears after I had complained to her about how ratty they were. Apparently they aren't as bad as I think they are haha! Maybe I will post some pics and y'all can tell me wether I'm a drama queen or not. :)
