Thumbs up Dremmel...best invention ever

Last night I bought a dremmel at Menards. Used it on Maggie's nails today. I will never clip again!!! It was fantastic. She actually fell asleep on the floor while I was doing it. Her nails are now shorter and so smooth on the ends and no click click on the hardwood floors ( well very little anyway.) The best invention since the scissor...best $40 I ever spent!!

I use it too. I was warned that Carley's nails always bleed... not a bit of blood with it.

I am glad you posted. I am thinking of getting one of these. We may have a regular dremel somewhere in our basement. Would that work or do you need a special dog one?

I use a regular dremel, just only use the lowest speed setting and make sure you dont get any hair caught in the rotating bit. I accidentally did and it rips the hair out. Poor Panda had a bald patch on his leg, not that he seemed to even notice it happen as it was so quick.

I always used the clippers with Ruby, but I decided that this time, I would try the dremmel with Rosie. I asked Rosie's breeder if she could show me how to use it. When we picked up Rosie she showed us and let us practice on Rosie. It was pretty easy. I don't know why I had not tried it sooner!

She said she used a $20 dremmel from Walmart and it worked great. That is what we are going to buy this week.

Jkline65: You've just inspired me! I've been thinking about going the dremmel route for a while now, but I've been scared! I've just recently conquered fear of the clipper and fear of the scissor (me, not my poodle!) and started home grooming. The dremmel is the last tool I have to get the guts to buy and use. After hearing the good "buzz" about it from you, I'm feeling braver. I'm so glad you had such success using it and shared it with us, thanks!

Leroy's front nails are long, but they do not touch the floor, so he doesn't "click" when he walks. His quicks are long. I clip off little bits at the end, more like shaving off a few layers with clippers and then I dremmel it smooth and round. The dremmel is a great tool if the dog accepts it.

Jkline65: Posting again to say you DID make a dremel convert of me after all! I have been using it for weeks now with great success--my guy doesn't even flinch! I let him get accustomed to the sound and vibration over the period of a few days before actually using it on him. Then, I placed him on the grooming table and filed away. What a difference in the smoothness of the nail edge, and it's definitely more comfortable for him than the Millers Forge Pet Nail Clipper I used to use. Live and learn--thanks to you!

There's two types of dremels you'll find at walmart, a $20 one and another thats about $40. The $40 is like a little motor in your hand! LOVE it! I have my $20 at the salon, in case is gets dropped.. or stolen, but it really can't hold up to the $40 one.

Neither Holly or Quincy will let me near their feet with nail clippers, but the dremmel...they endure it and let me keep their nails a reasonable length. I do not use anything else on them.
