We started using a dremmel on our Great Dane because his nails were SO thick (and black) I had a really hard time clipping them. It's GREAT because there are never any sharp edges and you can take the nail down slowly so it was easier not to accidentally hit the quick . I haven't used it on Huxley because he likes to play on our stone/concrete patio so much that his nails naturally wear down smoothly. We always used the regular dremmel - not a special pet one - and it worked perfectly.

So glad I came across this thread. Hubby already owns a dremel so my question would be, "what type of tip are you using?". I'm thinking, just based on the obvious, that it would either be the little cylindrical shaped piece that has a sandpaper type stuff around it or the small tip that is kind of knurled similar to what the nail techs use as a final finishing tip when they do acrylic nails. Scooter let me clip the tips of his nails once, but he wasn't really happy with me while doing it. Max's nails tend to grow long very fast and while he doesn't mind the clipping, it's hard to get them short enough due to catching the quick sometimes.

**Edited to add--Never mind my question. I just watched the video in the sticky post and got my answer. I really need to take like a whole week or something and read all the posts. There is a wealth of information here!

I prefer the $20 dremmel over the $40 one as an all breed dremmel. Why because the higher the speed, the more likely the dremmel "skips" when moving the dremmel over the nail which most dogs dont like. Also the higher speed means more friction that causes heat on the nail which is also uncomfortable on the dog if you hold the dremmel on the nail for more than a few seconds. And of course from experience the lower speeds are more tolerable to small breeds and dogs that are uncomfortable/ not used to the dremmel. Now if I have a dane you better believe I wished I had the $40 one lol. My $20 dremmel does just fine for most of the clients I use it on and if you keep a new sandpaper tip then it tackles the large breeds spoos, labs, shepherds, etc in a reasonable amount of time.
