Ok, everyone. I need your help. I have two poodles....one toy sized toy and one "king sized" toy. The king sized toy, Tips, has a lovely coat and I have super groomer who has taken over his care so he's looking fantastic. In fact, he's going to be her demo dog next summer. Yeah! My other poodle is my first poodle, Oliver, a little blue toy senior citizen that we've had for about a year and a half. Oliver doesn't have the best coat. It's rather thin and not so curly. About 8 mos. ago I put him in a german and he was pretty cute. He has nice ears so they looked good shaved and didn't fly away. He looked a bit like a toy sized kerry blue terrier with a shaved face. My only complaint is that his head looked pretty small compared to the rest of his body. Then I got a new blade and got a bit carried away, and cut him WAY too short. Sooo...my beloved Oliver looks like a Gremlin and Tips looks like a Ralph Lauren model. I adore Oliver and want him to look less Gremlin like. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should aim for? He can't have a big top knot because it flops over....so 1.5-2 inches is it. He's pretty square shaped and has a fair bit of leg, but is wide in the front. He also has a roached back and a low tail set, but that can be made to look better with some scissoring. I just don't know what to do with him. His ears are short now and I guess I can start letting them grow out.

Any suggestions? I'd like to do something myself because eventually I want to learn how to groom both poodles on my own. At this point, though, I thought about just letting him go fuzzy.

Thanks!

Laura

For poodles like him, I just do a shorter, modified Modern trim. I do a little silver phantom toy who has lovely hair everywhere except her topknot, and that's what I do on her. I usually use a 3/8" guide comb on her body, leaving her neck and legs. I then scissor in the legs (with angulation and everything.) and neck/topknot. For a roached back/lowset tail, you will want to take the top of the roach very short, while leaving fill in any dips. So instead of just running your guide comb over the contour of the back, you might just want to use scissors on the topline. If your boy looks good in a german, you could go ahead and do the carrot tail/shaved ears on him too. A german trim really isn't that much different then a modern anyway, at least to my eyes. ;) You could also do a Miami trim, with a short body/bracelets. That way you could make his topknot shorter to balance with the body. That wouldn't really flatter his roach back though. :-\

Here is a link to that little phantom toy's pictures so you can see kind of what I'm talking about. :) Cutest poodle ever!!!! Hopefully the pics show up...FYI, I plan on taking her topknot shorter next time, as it's still a bit floppy. :p :D And a shorter trim suits her well, as she's a bit heavy in the body. HTH!
