Pablo the chihuahua is 8 years old. When he was 3 years old he had a growth removed that was mast cell cancer. They wanted us to do radiation. It would be $3,000.00 and would not prevent the cancer from coming back in other areas. We opted not to.
Lately (last two months) he has been coughing intermittently, but it has been increasing in frequency and severity. The last few days he has not been able to breath well through his nose and is doing a lot of reverse sneezing.
So off to the vet today. I was sure he either had congestive heart failure or a tumor pressing on his lungs and/or heart. The vet listened and said his heart and lungs sounded great. So we did a chest xray. Everything is normal, no tumor, no lung problems, heart looks wonderful. So he was diagnosed with allergies and we went ahead and gave him a steroid shot since he was so uncomfortable with his breathing.
He already seems better.
The vet said he thought his cancer would have been back by now. He is surprised just how healthy Pablo is. Pablo used to go to work there with my daughter every day. He was so cute and happy to be there. Walked around like he owned the place. Pablo usually growls and will bite strangers but at the hospital he wags his tail and greets everyone! lol, I think he thought he was back at work, just doing his job!

Oh wow isn't it glorious when you are certain that you will be hearing bad news and it turns out to be great!
Please do be careful allowing steroids especially in an older dog - a shot followed by five days of pills killed my Taylee. After it was too late, another vet told me that the the steroid was entirely uncalled for in her situation.
