Yup, the main difference I pick up on is the fact they have those big removable lenses [that you MUST have one of, but you can different ones suited for different things too], where as a 'point & shoot' has the built in lens that 'pops out' when you turn the camera on and is effectively ready to point and 'shoot' straight away. A DSLR has full manual controls that generally need a fair bit of tweaking to get the right lighting and aperture etc etc before shooting the pic.
Basically think of a paparazzi with the huge lens, or a professional photographer with a bag full of different lenses and they twiddle the lens itself a fair bit vs your pocket camera.
Before digital cameras were around, they were simply called SLRs. They're now DSLRs simply cos the D is for digital.
ONE DAY I will get myself a DSLR. One day.
