Useless Rant
A nice lady who works at my office is a lover of Yorkies. Four years ago her 9 month old puppy got loose and was killed by car. She bought another (from yet another byb). She then decided that the only way that she would not "run out of Yorkies and not have to pay the ridiculously high prices" was to have babies of her own. But she could not afford the price of a female. When I suggested rescue she thought that would be great until she found out the wouldn't sell her an unspayed female.
She finally gave up and found a very cute Chinese Crested, unspayed, that her daughter's neighbor gave her. She thought they would make adorable puppies together and she would have her never-ending supply of Yorkies.
Another coworker who does rescue and I tried to gently remind her of all the hard work we do and why we cannot approve of her breeding plans and why neutering and spaying is so much better for the health of her beloved doggies.
This morning she told me that she has been confining her little dogs in the bathroom together to keep them separated from the bigger, rougher dogs. Last night she opened the door when she got home and they were tied! Of course she didn't expect it to happen. She didn't know the Crested was in heat (or going to go into heat). She had planned on waiting a year or two but she's so excited. I had to just turn around and leave her office as she quickly told me that her daughter will take one and her roommate's sister will take one and there will be no problem getting homes for such a cute breeding.
I'm about ready to give up rescue. The majority of people are just stupid and what we do seems not to make a dent. Not only can you not save all the dogs, you can't even save most of them and for every one I save, there's dozens more being produced, sold, abandoned.

I feel your pain too....
I have even had it in my own family..
We have and English Toy Terrier... She isn't even 2 yet....
My mum's good friend has a 6 yr old Stud Pomeranian that she got from her BYB friend...
My mum wanted to breed them together because it would be cute, and she wanted to know what they would look like....
Thankfully she got Coco speyed.... but still.... UGH
There is just NO getting through to some people...
But... Fuzzy the 6 yr old BYB Pomeranian.... has been studded out on the internet, to the first buyer

What really bugs me is that these "accidents" get sold for more than a registered purebred do will - at least around here they do.
There is an ad on our local used website for a "multipoo" - it says its a cross between a Maltese and a Pomeranian -- so surely that should be a Maltipom! They don't even know what made up name they should give to these puppies.
I just don't understand why people will pay $800 for a mutt - which is what they are -- and turn their noses up at a registered dog. I guess I don't totally object to cross breeds, but they should sell for $50 tops.

I know its frustrating and you feel like what you do doesn't make a difference in the overall problem. I promise you though, that if each of your rescues could speak, they would say that you made a difference for them. They are ALIVE, HAPPY, and LOVED because of you. You might not make a difference for them all, but you make a difference for each one that you rescue/foster.

PLEASe do not et discouraged by the idiots. Dogs like Jackson, Jack and Jill, and your new boy NEED people like you. I admire people that work in rescue, and I look forward to when I'm done school, in my own house, and have the finances that permit me to foster.

Why? Are mutts of less value than purebreds?
Honestly, while there are very few purposely crossbred breeders that do health testing, temperament testing, etc., those that do, I have no problem with. A lot of purebred BYB dogs should not be sold for more than $50.
I just hate when people generalize all mutts as being BYB/puppy mill dogs and think they are worth less than purebreds. I love shelter mutts!

Well mutts have no less value as pets, but to me they have less monetary value to purchase. Often breeders of registered purebred dogs spend time and money on stud fees; sending the bitch away to be bred - stuff like that. Whereas mutts are often the result of an accidental breeding that costs nothing.

As an owner and lover of Chinese Cresteds I let out a big groan when I read this. I have 8 Chinese Cresteds of which 4 are rescues of which 2 are mixes. I have worked in rescue, briefly as the board turned out to have issues... but continue to do what I can where I can for rescue dogs. Please do not be discouraged. No you are sadly not going to be able to save them all or resolve the problems that create the need for rescue, BUT what you do is SOOOOOOOO important for the dogs who are helped. And I have seen so many dogs find wonderful forever homes, and get medical treatment some of them desperately need. I am also encouraged by all the TV programs which are educating the public about the plight of dogs. I have been amazed how many people I have met who don't know about Petfinder, but are very interested when told they can look there by breed and location. And yes, we all wish we could fix stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And isn't it even worse when you have to work with people like that!!!!!!! I can not tell you how much respect I have for rescue people. In the words of Winston Churchill "Never never never give up"!!

I was getting my haircut last month, when one of the nail techs started getting all excited behind her station. Unbeknownst to me, her little shihtzu was in her bed, by her feet, having puppies. The woman let out a big squeal when she found it was a girl, because girls go for more money, and was also most excited that they were really tiny, because everyone wants tiny dogs right now. There they were, right in the fume-laden salon. She actually cut the umbilical cords with the scissors she was using on her clients, and was using the towels from the salon as well. She was all excited about this litter because the daddy wasn't a year old yet, and belonged to her neighbor, and she didn't even have to pay for stud services. She chose him because he was so tiny, and would make tiny puppies. This was the mom's 4th litter. I was completely disgusted by her, and her cavalier attitude. "Yes! There's July's house payment!" Is a direct quote. The good news is that everyone else was disgusted too. Unfortunately she owns the salon, because if it had been left to popular vote, what was going one wouldn't have. No health testing, no care for conformation, no proper whelping area...grrrrr. Quite the heated debate ensued, but nothing we said would make a bit of difference.
Have you ever heard the story of the starfish? The starfish story: making a difference!
Well that's what you folks who work in rescue do. "Made a difference to that one!"
