The closest clubs are an hour away from me. The only reason I would join is for reduced prices on training as one of them has some incredible positive trainer.

Voting rights were not mentioned but I wouldn't be surprised if they also want to assess commitment and records of showing up, as promised, to club events. That said, what the what, on no welcome, no acknowledgment from the president/chair on two new members in such a small club?!!! That would not sit well with me.
Currently the club I prefer and have taken most of my classes is at least a one hour highway driving. The other club is 30 minutes away and the classes are at night - our agility class is 8 pm - normally my dog is ready to go to bed for the night at that time. There is only so many evening hours after work to fit in so many levels of classes for every sport that I understand the crazy hours but I'm not fond of them - their last class is at 10 pm most nights. There is a privately owned training facility 20 minutes away - owned by a cruel, unpleasant trainer who charges an arm and a leg. I refuse to go back there.

Mfmst, I too wish I had a closer facility - I'm just thrilled I do have several great options with fantastic trainers.

It is a bit like trying to join an exclusive country club snow, and just about as welcoming. I understand how your DH feels, sometimes I wonder why I'm bothering. Pudellvr the discount on classes is nice, but of course that doesn't kick in right away either. I was aware of that though and can understand people might join just for the discount, I just didn't know about not being able to vote. Wow skylar, those are late times for classes! In the winter months when it get dark by 5:00, I don't want to start a class later than 7.

I used to show Frenchies about 20 years ago and I can honestly say I do not miss the "we three and no more" attitude. I met some fantastic people and great dogs, but the whole experience was spoiled by the snobbishness and cliques.

However, if good people don't join it's never going to get better, so good on you for making a difference.

I guess you have to decide how much you want to belong to this club, and if it's worth the effort.
Sounds kind of like eighth grade to me, but there are adults who don't get much beyond that!

Carolinek, you raise a very good point and definitely one I've thought about, why, and is it worth it. When I think of why, it's because of what I believe this club could be for me, and other people who love dogs and doing things with them. Realistically though, it will probably take myself and a lot of other people like me to join, and several years to make the changes necessary to make it enjoyable. Basically what the old guard is so scared of, being taken over and out numbered.

Ahh....when you put it like that, infiltrating the stuffed shirt crowd sounds like fun! If I lived closer, I'd join you in the effort
