I have to share this with you because only poodle people would understand LOL

2 1/2 years ago when I got Rusty I bought a bell for him to ring when he needed to go outside

For an entire year I rang the bell and said "ring the bell.. go outside" every time we went out to potty and every time he looked at me like I was crazy and had three heads

When he was a year and a half old, one night after it was dark and we had already been out he started whining and barking to go outside… He will do this routinely in the evening and then you let him out and all he does Is mill around outside So this time I told him no we are done we are not going back outside.. He whined for a few more minutes and barked at me a couple times and then walked over to that bell that he had never touched and rang it over and over and over again Like we were on a sinking ship LOL I laughed so hard and got up and gave him a huge hug let him out and then we came back inside and he had many awesome treats... Since that day he rings the bell to go out every single time

Whoops didn't mean to hit send

So Lola is now two years old

I've tried to teach her to ring the bell but Lola is a true diva and when I try to teach her she looks at me like "I am a diva ....I don't ring bells... It is beneath me" LOL

Today she got left inside by accident when Rusty went out to potty first thing this morning... She must have really needed to go out or really wanted to go play because she went straight to that bell and rang it frantically!

I was sitting on my chair on the computer and I knew that Rusty was outside so I hear the bell and I'm thinking who the heck is ringing the bell like that and I looked over and she is over there just having at it LOL

OMG! I laughed so hard and did the same with her as I did with rusty that first time! Lets see if she does it again

Be a snap to get rusty to do it... I just have to close all the doors and wait readily with the camera... I'll post that tonight... I will try and recreate this mornings situation tomorrow and see if she does it again.. I hope she does ... In the mean while ... Take a gander at my door... That line worn into the wood is from rusty ringing the bell a million times a day lol

Fabulous! Hopefully Lola will keep it up. It will help that her brother is doing it. I am in hopes of teaching my boys to use a bell also.

Your story inspires me.. I have bells on both doors for Rhett to ring to go outside.. But so far it is hit or miss as far as him using it. But we are still working at it ... He thinks I am nuts when I ring it and say outside..

That's how rusty was for an entire year... and actually I had given up trying but the bell remained on the door. he rang it that first time because we installed an invisible fence (I live on a golf course...we're not allowed an actual fence and what we are allowed is so low that they jump it like its agility when they see a deer or something) anyway he had been thru 2 wks of training before I let him off leash on our property. That day he was free to come in and out of the house all day and he LOVED IT. so when it got dark and we closed the door he started barking and begging to go back out lol I told him no so and he ran over and rang that sucker like mad.... U can imagine my reaction lol Im sure he always understood about the bell .. just that the payoff that nite was worth him making the effort.... I made such a big deal about it that from that day on he uses it regularly.

Lola is a very calm easy going girl. she never really asks for anything except to be loved on (and very pushy about that lol) She waits for rusty to ring the bell or someone to say "wanna go outside?" and then perks up.. I'll be excited if she uses it again but she is so laid back I'm not holding my breath ;-) I love her diva attitude and the lady-like way she saunters around lol

Keep trying! They are so smart and have awesome little minds of their own which can make it challenging for us silly humans lol

I did it with Molly, but instead of a bell she whacks her leash against the door(the metal clasp) She also surprised me with it one day!...Now I sometimes regret it cuz she's like clockwork......every morning at 6:00 and being retired I like to sleep in! No way! She's very persistent. If I bury my head, she barks at me! and (if I don't have the leash wrapped around the doorknob) she has even brought it to my bed! Spoiled dog........

Been there!! his persistence is at night after dark lol he just CANNOT for the life of him understand y I close the door and make him stay inside after dark lol
