I love watching other groomers deal with bad dogs.. it slays me. And it normally makes them start laughing about it too.

Our kennel club had a Howliday Dog Wash fundraiser on Saturday. I volunteered for the afternoon shift. I was the "lucky" one who got to bathe and dry the long-haired mastiff that came in It took FOUR of us to guide him up the steps into the tub. Getting out of the tub was fairly easy - he was ready to come down the steps! Took another FOUR of us AND a prong collar to get him up the steps to the table for his blow dry. I'm not sure what this dog weighed... 145 maybe? He was ABSOLUTELY harder to move than my 1,000 pound HORSE!!!

I do not envy professional groomers - my daughter gets to groom the mastiff on his regular appointments... I'm just glad I never need to do it again! He was a complete sweetheart and loved to give gentle kisses, but when he didn't want to go someplace, he did his darndest to hold his ground - and he was quite good at it!

Default Why I do what I do...

Just wanted to share a happy story in grooming

It's things like this that keep me going on those frustrating days with frustrating dogs:

A lady brought in a dirty, matted poodle. Overgrown topknot, overgrown fluffy face, hair full of debris. The poodle was a dingy brown and apricot color - but lo and behold after the bath, he's a white miniature poodle! They keep the dog outside. For an outside dog, he wasn't in TOO bad of shape, but still lots and lots of matts. Of course she wants to "save the hair and keep the face short, but still fluffy." I brushed out the dog, used a comb attachment all over and scissored the whole body. Shaved the face short (he would look terrible with a fluffy face) and gave a proper, glorious poodle topknot. No feet shave but basically the body looked like a bichon body with column-like poofy legs. We quoted her a price before the groom, but charged her extra for dematting fees afterwards. When she came to pick up her dog, we told her how much it would be and she asked "Why so expensive!" - she was told "You'll see why when you see your dog. It's worth it." As soon as she saw him, she exclaimed "Oh my gosh he's so PRETTY!!!" and "He's so beautiful!!!" And I agree - not just cause I did the haircut lol, but really, he was a GORGEOUS dog. He came in looking like a dog living on the streets, and he turned into a show dog. He looked like LEUllman's Beau after We joked with the lady that she can't keep the dog outside now because someone would steal him, and she exclaimed "Oh NO! He will be inside with us! He looks so great!" I'm so glad that one haircut can totally change the dog and how someone feels about him. I also hope that people will spend the extra dollars to not just "shave down" their dog. He was great on the table (besides wanting to sit every second), and his hair was fun to scissor!
