Default Dogs Poisoned over the Holiday

This really sickens me and the fact it happened in my town makes me really nervous (note, one of them was a white toy poodle):

Yet another reason you shouldn't leave your dogs unattended in the back yard.

Oh no! Is there no end to the madness of mankind?! I would like five minutes alone with the jerk responsible for the poisonings. Or four minutes, I could get the job done by then. What a horrible thing! And you know I'm with you, Rowan, when it comes to not leaving a dog unattended in the yard. I know opinions on that are split, but we're all in unison in wanting to keep our pets safe.

This... AND it's not a bad idea to regularly survey your yard to be sure someone didn't "plant" something when your dogs weren't out there!

I live in a pretty good neighborhood in a pretty good town, but there are CRAZIES everywhere!!! Since living in my home (19 years) I have occasionally found nearly entire pieces of bread, 1/2 chewed apples, etc., in my yard when I'm outside with the dogs (luckily I found these "goodies" before they had a chance to find them!!)

Not for a second do I suspect these items may have been laced with anything dangerous - more likely I have a neighbor who is feeding the squirrels and when the load gets too heavy to carry away, they drop it in my yard.... HOWEVER... this could/would be a method for someone who WANTED to harm my dogs to transport the poison into my yard... Load a piece of food with something deadly and toss it over the fence!! My dogs would eat it without hesitation unless I find it first!

This is a good opportunity to remind everyone to be as diligent as possible in the care of our fur-kids... Don't obsess, obviously, but definitely be aware of what's going on in the world!! Be careful out there!

Barb

(ps... FYI I'm going to move a new member's introduction post into this forum - it is addressing a similar issue of poisonings in a public park in England. Some people are simply SICK!)

I have always owned a poodle, and lived in metropolitan Chicago (Lincoln Park area) or now north of Evanston. I have also always heard about these sick people stealing dogs from cars, back yards, outside of stores, etc., and using them for bait for the dog fighting ring. I can remember probably 12 years ago when Jake was a pup (He was always on leash in city parks, etc) and an officer was on the beat and he said, that sure is a cute little guy -- beware we get lots of calls reporting stolen dogs, etc., so be sure you don't ever tie him up outside a store or something, or leave him in a car --- I have always remembered that, since there are some pretty sick people out there. Sad isn't it? Always bothers me when I see a dog loosely tied to a post outside a grocery store or something -- and tend to linger just to be sure the little dog is ok (or big dog).
