I could just about manage being locked into a phone contract for a year, but when all the phone companies went to two years, I bailed and bought an unlocked phone. When I ran the numbers through a spreadsheet, it was actually more cost-effective that way. And it means I am not stuck with all the phone company branded apps and lock-outs. Example ... unlocked Android phones mostly support Skype or tethering or hotspot use. I like using the phone's 3G connection for a laptop or sharing the connection with my partner's iPhone
