Default Shipping homeless dogs

I just wondered what everyone on here thinks about shipping dogs from Ontario to Saskatchewan - or from Cabo in Mexico to Calgary. My local radio station had a segment on the four pitbull puppies that arrived at the Humane Society in Regina a week or so ago.

I am not sure if I totally understand the problem, but we have dogs at our Humane Society that are desperately looking for homes. Why do we need dogs shipped in here? I suppose the dogs coming from Mexico - maybe there are hundreds or thousands of homeless dogs down there - I don't know.

I wonder if anyone on here really knows why they do this because people who phoned in to my local radio show mostly thought it was ridiculous.

Well, if the pittie puppies came from Ontario, they were pulled and transported so they didn't die because of their breed.
Here in the US many homeless dogs are transported from here in the South to up North because there are more homes in the north and many of the shelters have little money, poor euthanasia techniques (like the gas chamber) and a very short safe period for animals (I think in one rural shelter in NC it is 3 days). To give you an idea, there was a news story today that a shelter in NC is accused of disposing of live animals that were improperly euthanized and later found alive at the landfill.
I'm glad they get out of here since the conditions aren't good and they will have a shot at a better life up there. it is painful to get things changed for animal welfare changed down here, especially now that the economy is so bad. I'm not sure that it really harms homeless animals up there since so many places do it and I can't imagine they would if it hurt other animals.

I know that here in Utah, our shelters are full of big black dogs, but there are waiting lists for people looking and waiting for small dogs. Many of these families, who would choose rescue first, end up buying from bybs because there are so few small rescue dogs with good temperaments in the shelters. There are so many big, black dogs that are put down because no one wants them, but when a small dog arrives in the shelter, it usually lasts only a few hours. In other places in the country, they're euthanizing small dogs because there are so many of them. We're getting a lot of these small rescue dogs transported here because the demand is so high and because they're not taking homes away from the lab and pit mixes that seem to fill our shelters. They're competing with the byb's and petstores.
