I get to pick him up in a couple hours. I have a feeling he will still be bouncing off the walls. I got him the cone collar because he tends to be a licker. Any advice is welcome. He was so excited and jumping all over the vet when we dropped him off. I hope he won't hate me!
He won't hate you! Kodi was a little sore the first two days and still groggy from the anesthesia so he was calmer. It was after the first two days I struggled to keep him calm. (I also had surgery a few days later... so he ended up at a friend’s house and she couldn't keep him calm either)
My suggestion, lots of Kongs, or puzzle toys to keep his mind occupied.
If they send you home with antibiotics or pain meds make sure you give them with some food. They can upset his tummy. Not every vet sends you home with both, or either.
Thanks for the tips. I got his treat ball ready and will probably have to crate him a bit to keep him from running around. They don't give pain meds or antibiotics at my vet.
Hope Ryker is doing well post surgery! Sending healing vibes his way. I have that to look forward to with Darcy at some point. It will be a slightly bigger production as he only has one descended testicle!
I'm sure Ryker will do great. Nickel is going in for his this Thursday. Just like you, I think I might have difficulty keeping him calm. I have scheduled a day off work on Friday so I will be able to stay with him for the 3 days after his surgery.
He is home and all he wants do do is eat and play! I have him in his crate right now to make him rest. He hates the cone but when I took it off for him to eat he went after the stitches so back on it went. Gracie is a little scared of him with the cone on. lol
Beau was groggy for a day, then a little subdued for another. (And who can blame him?!) After that he was pretty much his old self. We tried various cones, but he did a Houdini and slipped right out of every one! We finally ended up borrowing an inflatable collar, which was much more successful. (He could still reach the spot, but not easily, and with vigilance we mostly kept him from licking.) I love this picture - he looks like he's wearing a life jacket.
Sending good quiet healing thoughts..Flyer came home without even knowing he had anything done and he had one undescended testicle (luckily it was caught just a little bit up so it didn't take that much more to get it)..I moved his crate out to the living room so he could be with us but confined as he wanted to play with the other 3 dogs..I also had a soft x-pen that I used for him as it gave him little more room then the crate did..
He is feeling fine this morning but keeps slipping out of the cone. I am going to search for an inflatable one today. Pet stores are limited around here so wish me luck! He is acting like his normal crazy self. Keeping him calm for a whole week should be interesting
hopefully he heals quickly. I've always had good luck with the neuters- and rarely have had to cone (at least not when supervised) and thankfully 'keeping quiet' is less important with the boys then the girls.
When Chagall was neutered I just watched him like a hawk so he wouldn't trouble his stitches. He did manage to dislodge one, but he only had three and the skin seemed to knit together real quickly. The vet sent us home with a cone but I just couldn't use it, it totally freaked Chagall out so I decided to be his shadow (except for when I showered!).
The vet also gave us a tube of YUK, a nasty tasting gel, to put around (not on!) the incision. It didn't deter Chagall, but I know other dogs are really put off by it. Might be worth a try. The recovery time goes quickly for boys, they have it a lot easier than girls (I think that's true across species!). And I agree, get him a puzzle toy or some novel things (peanut butter or frozen yogurt stuffed kong) to occupy him. Hope Ryker and you are back in full swing real soon. I wish him a speedy recovery. Let us know when he's back to zooming around!
Today I took the cone off for a while and he licked a little bit and then just wanted to snuggle. I will put it back on when I can't watch him. The incision is healing quickly.
