Converting people from crap food to quality food

I was an Iams dog food feeder. I fed that to my dogs their entire life. I thought it was good for them. Since getting my spoo pup and finding out all sorts of information on here I realized it was not good. I decided to go with Fromm foods. Today I convinced my neighbor (Iams) and my sister (Sc.Diet) that they were not good foods for their fur babies. They both bought bags of Fromm today!:) My sister posted about it on FB and one of her friends is now asking about it.

Anyway, just thought I would share that at least 2 dogs tonight will start eating better. I did explain to them about gradually switching.

Wish my neighbour would. She buys a cheapo supermarket dog food, and actually believes the picture on the packet, and that the green bits are made of peas, the orange bits of carrot, and the brown bits pure meat. Not an easy person to have a fact-based discussion with either ...

Sounds like your neighbor and my brother have the same thought process. I kept his dog when he was a small puppy (i.e. doing all the HARD WORK, with no thanks after) because my brother couldn't have a little puppy in his apartment. When I had Hudson, he ate Blue Buffalo along with TQ. When my brother got him back from me, he not only changed his name to BUDDY, but started feeding him Ol' Roy. Cheapest of cheap.

My brother then moved on to Beneful this year and ignored my mother and I telling him that was bad food. He then switched to Chef Michaels, and is now on Iams.

He said to me one day, "Buddy likes all the meat chunks in the Chef Michaels but doesn't like the peas." I cut him off there and told him he was a doofus and those weren't really peas but GREEN, SPHERICAL kibble.

What kills me about people feeding low quality foods is that the information to better health for your dog is out there. And SUPER easy to find.

Yep! And my neighbour's dog is overweight, so she keeps cutting down on the quantity - I suspect the poor creature is getting high carbs, low protein, and little fat ...

Woo! +2 healthy dogs! :)

I hate trying to talk to people about good foods. I try to subtly mention it if it comes up in conversation, since if I ever dare say "Well, -insert grocery store brand here- is not a very healthy food. The ingredients blah blah blah" they call me snooty. Because evidently, feeding your dog even a decent quality food is silly and only for rich snobs. Pah. According to the humble folks of Tennessee "It's a dog! It'll eat garbage if you gave it to 'im."

.../facepalm

The worst thing is when people declare that they feed their dog Beneful, like it's the healthiest possible food you could give them.

Last Saturday, I asked my sister if I could get anything for her at the pet store. She said that her dog was out of food and she wasn't going grocery shopping until later and could I pick up a can of dog food.

I used the opportunity to buy a bag of Merrick Senior and a couple of cans of the same. I don't know if she will stick with it, but she did seem impressed by what she read on the bag. The thing is, she (as I am sure a lot of people are) and her family are all about convenience. If she has to go out of her way to get the dog's food, I'm not sure that she will.

I understand about the food issue. I have had my girls on Science Diet and ID for over two years without any improvements. Had a lot of issues with Cookie and they put her on a special diet - one was for sensitive stomachs, the other was for allergies.

Neverless, after watching my girl eat her paws up...still  , I started looking at gluten free foods and stuff without chicken and beet pulp. I want them eating healthy food that benefits them.

I went from Nutro Chicken and Rice for sensitive stomachs to Fromm's Salmon A La Veg.

I am hoping the Salmon A La Veg will help firm up their stool so I can stop with the anal gland expressing.

I am trying to convince my mother to use the Nutro since her dogs have no issue with Chicken or beet pulp. It is a hard sell since I have to order Fromm's over the internet and I have to go over an hour away for the Nutro but I will prevail!!!!
