My daughter, the owner of two minis, just got married and her husband has a Akita/Huskey mix -male - intact - that is about 12 years old. They are living at his place now but will be moving here in the future. He has already met - and absolutely loves! - the minis and they love him too but I am worried about Teddy. He seems to be dog agressive lately. what would be the best way to introduce them? I thought we should take Teddy over there and meet on the road on leash - do you think that is a good idea? On my road, Teddy is aggressive. In town he is not - so I think he thinks the road is ours.

Ginger will be leary but she loves other dogs so i am not worried about her except I told them that if he is going to be in the same yard with my dogs he has to be fixed - i would worry that he might hurt my Gingerbread - ya know she is awful purty! lol

so what do you all think - appreciate some good advice from the dog whisperers on here!
tnaks!

All your thoughts are what I would do. Male dog must be fixed. And meeting in a neutral place is a great idea. You may want to do it more than once if possible. I would keep Teddy on the leash for quick correction:) for a while. Once they do fine, then bring them to your street and see how that goes.

I like threads like these:)

I love Akitas and I think they are gorgeous animals... but... my only experience with one in real life is the purebred Akita that came into our shelter (loooong story, but the owner was a real piece of work!) Anyway, Pugsley was great at the shelter with the other dogs, but when he got adopted things went south. The new owners ran a hunting lodge/guided hunting business so had many dogs that came and went along with their clientele... For some reason, someone had a doberman there too and Pugsley did not like the dob... so he killed him! :scared: I'm not sure I'd be comfortable allowing an intact Akita into my yard with my dogs at all (unless I was dead certain that there woudn't be ANY squabbles, AT ALL - started by any of the dogs...) I know there are wonderful, dog-friendly Akitas out there - but (IMO) I would be wary of allowing free access/play off leash... but that's just me...

This does not surprise me. I had looked at Akitas at one point in my life. I did the research and then looked at puppies and found they were not the breed for me. I found puppies to be too aggressive and had read too many frightening things about their temperament. How horrible for that dobie and its owner!!

My father had a Husky some years ago. We all loved him and he was a beautiful animal and very friendly with the family. There were no issues with him that we could see;, but one day he just ate a whole litter of kittens that the family cat had. :scared: Needless to say, dad sent him away.

I am sure, as plumcrazy is, that there are some good tempered Akitas and Huskies out there. I do hope that this is one of them and that all goes well with the introductions.
But, I don't think I would ever turn my back on him. Especially since Teddy is showing sings of being a bit aggressive. That male is a powerful dog and it might be difficult to control him if a situation get out-of-hand.

Please let us know how it goes.

I also agree meeting in a neutral place is a great idea. There are two things about having them meet on the leash. If the meeting goes bad you have control of the dogs while they are on the leash. The other side is, dogs tend to be more protective on the leash. Most dog parks do not allow leashes because of this very reason. You really need to play it by ear and watch for the dogs body language. You already have a good idea how Teddy is. He may also be protective of Ginger, so I would leave her out of the mix the first time.

Thanks for the assist, Barb.

I have a Facebook friend who mentioned a while back that they were looking for an Akita puppy. I gave her my (unsolicited) opinion about them, that some of them can be mean and that maybe she should consider another breed, since she has very young grandchildren (3 or 4, all under the age of 5).

Well, she just about bit my head off. Apparently they had had Akitas for the past 15 years or something and they're very nice dogs. I dropped it because it just wasn't worth it, but she hasn't changed my mind about it.

Thanks for all your replies - actually Kujo - the akita mix lol - had a swollen prostrate last year and the vet said when he was all better to get him fixed or it coudl happen again - so that should be ok - that will be done - My daughter says Kujo is very friendly and he loves "the girls" as we call them - he is lonely and when they are there he even comes in the house (he gets hot in the house) "the girls" are the minis - susie says last nite he was bothering Gabbie - the littliest one - and she put him in his place and he follwed her lead and went back to his corner. so he doesn't seem to be dominant at all - but Teddy is Teddy - of course Teddy listens to Gabbie too so i don't know...
