I hate hip dysplasia :(

Matrix was/still is passed out, taking up as much space on my bed as possible, and snoring. So I picked up back leg to shift him over a bit, and I noticed his paw pads have obvious "drag" marks on them. It made me so sad to think that his hips are so bad that he's already dragging his feet. He's only turning 7 years old in April. He still acts like a puppy (much to our annoyance), but his body can't really withstand it. Sigh....

I had no idea that Matrix had hip dysplasia. I am very sorry to hear that he is having to deal with that. But it sounds that he has a good spirit. When did you discover that he had hip problems? I have a friend that has a lab that is almost seven now with hd and they took him to the VSH about 2 years ago and had it repaired. He did great and the surgery was successful. About 4 months ago they had to have the other hip done. Haven't seen her in awhile to ask about the last surgery. I do know that it was a very expensive surgery (don't quote me on this but if my memory serves me right I think the cost was close to five thousand dollars) and there are no guarantees.

We've know he's had HD since we adopted him at 14 months old. Surgery is estimated at $8000 dollars. We're not prepared to spend that with no guarantees. Plus his epilepsy has been expensive enough as it is, and has taken 4 years to get him stabilized on his medication, so surgery could ruin that :S

He's not voicing his pain, just physically showing it, so I hope he's not in too much pain.

awwww poor guy to have to deal with all that. One would assume if he were really in any serious pain your vet would be able to give you something for that? I don't know, never dealt with that issue in any of my own dogs. I hope I never have to. I know a lot of people who do though and they use the combo type supplements like what poodlelover mentioned.

Riley is on Dasaquin for his back issues, and i really like it (glu/con. supplement). Just be careful what you buy. It is an unregulated field (human/pets), so anyone could put sand in a bottle and label it as glucosamine. I would go with a tested product (like dasaquin).

When he does actually start to show pain, your vet can give him some pain medication to use as needed.
