Default Our morning at the Vet

Today was the biggest day for testing for paris, the vet just called
and said he thought all of the paper work was in order. Today she had
her skin test, hip xrays, Thyroid test. Monday she has her CERF in
Indy, and she had her vWB last month. I'm so brain rattled today I
can't remember if they did the Neonatal Encephalopathy or not.

The only thing that hasn't been done is the Cardio test.

Total Cost for all of the testing: $900 (including a pedicure and
teeth cleaning today)

Am I forgetting anything?? I want to make sure I do this all right.

I found this really interesting. My vet told me that he has never
done complete testing for a dog before! This clinic is the biggest,
most advanced in my area, with 4 vets and three locations. He said
no one around here breeds dogs! I also live in a wealthy community.
He also said he doesn't have one single Standard Poodle as a patient.

Maybe this explains why this town has brushed us off as a pet therapy
team. I have to push hard for every visit we do. Is Everyone afraid
of liability, or just too involved with their own lives?

Do I live in the twilight zone?

Hunh. I live in a town of about 60,000 people, half of which are college students. :-) There are a lot of standard poodles here -- more standards than minis and toys, I think. At least that is what we see out and about.

I live in central IL and in the six years since we have had Sam, we've only seen one other standard out and about. Sam is the only standard that goes to our vet. I have seen more standard poodles in classifieds lately, but unfortunatly they are mostly from breeders who are also breeding 10 or more other breeds including all the poodles mixes. Toy poodles are EVERYWHERE! We've been looking for a mini for a long time and have yet to find anyone within a few hour drive from here.

Sam I am - where do you live? I live in east central IL. I know I've had to travel into either northern IN or southern IN to find some good breeders. Where did you get Sam? How fun to have someone nearby!

Oh and I have found a really good reputable mini breeder in Indiana - so depending on how far away you are - they might work for you.

We are outside of Pekin, IL near Peoria. We got Sam from a breeder near Freeport, IL. I'm pretty sure that was her last litter, but I haven't heard from her in quite awhile, the last time I got an email from her she was in the process of looking for a new female to breed. I don't know if she ever found one though since she never emailed about an upcoming litter. I have since lost her email address. If she were to ever have another litter I wouldn't hesitate to get another puppy from her no matter what the size. If you'd like, I could dig up her number. I would love to have the info for the mini breeder in IN.

Wow thats not a bad price for testing! I am in the process of getting everything ready to have Tuesdays hips tested.

I love in a small town with even smaller surrounding towns, all in all my county is about 30,000 people. I know of only a hand full of people in the surrounding towns who have Standards most people of BYB/Puppymill Toys and Minis. My vet loves Tuesday and everyone in the office asks what kind of dog she is haha!

Good luck with the breeding!

There is several other poodles living in my town, lots of miniatures
and toys, and I heard from my friend that a girl she works with
owns a standard poodle though I've never seen it.

I guess a lot of people who are dog owners doesn't understand
why all that testing is so important. It's crazy how no one breeds
dogs around where you live though! Lots of people breed dogs
in my small town...right now in our local paper there is Chihuhua
puppies and German Shepherd pups for sale, it's not often you
run across poodle puppies though.
