What colour is my poodle?

Hi everyone,

I just adopted a new pup! She's the most wonderful little dog ever! She's 6 weeks old and growing fast. She gained a whole pound in 2 days!

Her littermates were black or different shades of apricot and cream. My Dana is one of the lighter coloured ones.

Anyway, I thought her colour was cream, but now, I'm not so sure...

What do you guys think? Cream? Silver Beige?

Is it going to fade as she gets older?

I looked up poodle colours on the internet and it's all very confusing!

Anyway, it doesn't really matter what the colour is called, I like her just the way she is. (This is really just an excuse for you guys to tell me how cute she is! LOL :biggrin1: )

I agree... cream, and she'll probably lighten as she gets older. She's a cute little thing.

Regarding her leaving the litter so soon... I would be very careful about her vaccinations and exposure she gets. Do you have another dog at home to keep her doggie socializing going on, safely?

Enjoy your little girl! They do grow up so fast!

Thank you for your worries, Desertreef and ArreauStandardPoodle. I work at a vet clinic. She's had her first set of vaccines and deworming and will get her boosters promptly at 9 and 13 weeks. As for socialization, she gets to be drooled on and pummeled on a daily basis by 2 whippets, 2 boxers, a sheltie, a labrador retriever, a husky, and 6 cats!

Oh, maybe I should mention that all those dogs are not mine...LOL. They belong to my coworkers.

I'm lucky I get to bring my dog to work with me every day.

6 weeks is very, very young to take a puppy home. This is actually against the law here in Colorado. Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old before they leave the breeder.

I guess that is water under the bridge at this point. My biggest concern is the fact that you are taking her to a vet's office and exposing her to outside dogs when she has not had a second round of Parvo/Distemper shots. Parvo is spread through infected vomit and feces. All it would take is one of the Boxers stepping in infected poop at a dog park to have the virus brought into the office. I speak from experience because my friend sold a puppy to groomer who took her Mini puppy to work and to places like PetSmart. That puppy ended up with Parvo.

Anyway, your puppy is Cream. Silver Beige puppies are born a reddish brown color and have brown noses and eye rims.

I agree completely. Part of the spiel I give my puppy buyers is DO NOT take your puppy ANYWHERE where there could be other dogs, unless you KNOW them and unless you are CERTAIN they have had all of their shots UNTIL that puppy has had its third shot. And when you take the pup for its shots, carry it from the car the the exam room, do not put it on ther floor at the vets, and ask the vet if the table has been disinfected before setting the puppy on it.

A vets office could be the worst place for a puppy because why do people bring their pets there....usually because they are sick.

Our silver boys Mom has a super short tail like your pup, and Mom would put the pom pom right at the end. It never looked perfect but it made it look a bit better.

Where are all these breeders with nasty babies...I am in Ontario and can promise you I have never produced a cranky or nasty pup. I would love to know who these breeders are because something isn`t right there.

Thank you for your compliments, Locket and Olie...

I got my Dana from a breeder. She's supposed to be a standard but she doesn't have papers and her parents don't have a pedigree, so who knows?

I got her for her personality. There are a lot of bad poodles here in Ontario. A lot of so-called "breeders" are in it just for the money and will breed aggressive or unfit dogs and sell the cute puppies to unsuspecting new owners who don't know what they're in for.

Their dogs may look good, but they may also eat you alive!

I work at a vet clinic and it's sad to see very attractive young dogs get euthanized because they have monstrous personalities. We see a lot of aggressive poodles, german shepherds and golden retrievers mostly.

I've always wanted a poodle... but I wanted a nice one.

The breeder I got Dana from treated their dogs very well and my puppy's parents had the nicest personalities I have ever seen in any breed.

So, I'm not too sure how much of a purebred standard my Dana will turn out to be... she looks good now, but it's hard to tell at 6 weeks old.

I did think her tail was pretty short, though! LOL!

I'm not sure what kind of tail pompon she'll be able to have, if any!

Oh, well. I'd rather have a poodle no tail and a nice personality than a monster with a tail. LOL!!

Olie is so cute!!! How old is he?

Thank you. I agree on the tail at this point no turning back, LOL! Olie is a sweetie too I wouldn't trade him for anything. Olie is 5 months old and Suri will be 2 years in March. Then I have my pomies they are 14 months. So mine pack is fairly young.

Thank you for the info, cbrand. :)

I didn't know some states had laws on how old puppies had to be before adopting them...

There's no law here in Ontario... Breeders could sell puppies one day old if they wanted to.

I'll be very careful with my Dana. I don't want her catching anything! :scared:

I hope you're friend's puppy is okay.

He is a real sweatheart but very imature still at 18 months he acts so puppyish.
Love him though and Mandy and him compliment eachothe with her so princess like and him so frog like LOL (Jumping eveyrwhere)

Where abouts are you located I have a few poodle friends and we go to Bronte creek a few times with our poodles

I live in Ontario and while there are some bad breeders, there are PLENTY of good ones. While temperament is very important to consider, in my opinion health should be of the outmost importance when breeding/buying dogs. Especially with the health issues in poodles. While your breeders might love their dogs and they may have wonderful temperaments, whats to say they are fit to breed?

Hi your puppy is so cute welcome to the forum. Its nice to have another member from Ontario on the forum.

I've got to say in the defense of Ontario poodles I have 3 and they are all sweet wonderful dogs. Its too bad you have met any poodles that didn't have a wonderful personality.

I definatly don't love my breeder but Casey is here and I have learned to look harder next time.
She told me he was crate trained ya I found out he was trained to potty in his crate and personlly feel he lived in a crate before I brought him home.

There are some 8 month old pups on kijiji right now in my area I so want another CKC reg but Casey keeps chewing again and Mandy girl is barking right now so I know it would be hubby gone to have another. HUM not such a bad idea LOL

She's a little sweetie. Yes, she is cream. It does look like it has some silver in it. I imagine she will clear to be much lighter though.

My sister's toy had a very short tail like that and we had the pom on the end of the tail. It tended to flop around but it worked. Actually it was cute.

We don't have a law in Vermont on how old a puppy needs to be to sell but I know that no puppy will be leaving us until all shots and wormings are given and it is safe for them to leave. Vermont tends to be quite a liberal state and we don't have laws for a lot of things!! It's good in some ways and bad in others.

Welcome to the forum! Your pup is adorable. Yes, please be careful taking her anywhere, including work, until she's had her shots. Fonzie had Parvo before I adopted him from a rescue, and his foster mom (a vet tech), literally saved him from death. He was on an IV for a week without moving, he was so sick. The vet wanted to put him to sleep, but the lady refused. Luckily, Fonzie survived, but he was one of the very lucky ones!

As far as the short tail goes, Fonzie's tail is shorter I think! I managed to get a pom on his tail (just shave a very short portion at the base - maybe an inch or less).
