Hello everyone!

I am planning to get a standard puppy some time next year (hopefully by May-June 2014). I would like to start emailing some breeders but my online search didnt give me a lot of results.

Can anyone advice me any good breeder around the DC area (VA, MD, DC etc)

I don't have names for you but I do have a suggestion. Go to shows in your area and see and note what dogs look good to you. Write them down. Then talk to those who are showing other size poodles. Poodle people know breeders from all size poodles. Ask the toy people or minis who do they think is a good breeder to investigate for a standard. The reason I asked people with different sized poodles than the one I wanted was to get a more unbiased viewpoint. Then check out the standards and talk to the owner or handler. You can also start up conversations with people on the sidelines as often they are owners or people who are knowledgable about the breed. One you have a few prospects to work from do more research like asking people here their opinion of a specific breeder or at least their website. My breeder does not have a website so if I just did my research that way I never would have found him. Once you narrow it down try to see dogs that he has bred. I was able to meet a couple at shows and one handler let me interact and carry around one of his line for about forty minutes. I saw the kind of calm sweet personality that I was looking for. Shows are a grat place to find information out, they are a regular Peyton Place.

What you say though would be impossible to do for me... Unfortunately I do not live in the US right now, I live in Europe and my future American husband is in the military and deployed. When he gets back at the end of this year he will come to Europe and we will get married and go back to the US by spring 2014. At that point I will be looking for a job. I would like to get the puppy before I find a job so I will be able to have time to train her and she won't be home by herself all day long.. What do you suggest I should do ...?

I can see why my suggestions will not work for you. What are you looking for in a standard? Any particular color? Are you thing of agility or obedience or are you just looking for a family pet? Hopefully we can come up with some prospects for you. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. Will he still be in the service when you move to the US?

My fiancee and me really like silver spoos, but we are not going to exclude any other color. Eventhough my fiancee is very active as far as running and working out, we will most definetely live in an apartment and work full time, so an extremely active poodle will probably not do for us. I never considered any option other than just a family pet, but I would really like to train my poodle up to an advance training class (sorry my English is bad right now :P ). I never really thought about agility or obedience: will you tell me something about it? Will I find the time even working full time one day? we both grew up with family dogs, but as for ourselves, we would be first time dog owners.

Yes he will be, but he will be a reserve. And after a year or two his contract will be over. I don't think he will sign up again because he has his mind set on a different carrier (He graduated in International business and finance)

Silly me I forgot to say that we want a girl puppy ^^.

Also you dont have to explain me about agility and obedience, I am actually reading a book on that right now. I think anyways that we are looking for just a family pet.

I think that looking at some of the great dogs here on the forum and asking them where they got there baby might be a good place to start as well. You could also talk to some of your local breeders as it is becoming a more international thing and I know many breeders here that know the ones overseas so you might get some leads that way.

I know that we went to shows before my family got our minis we had when I was a kid. Also think about checking out older dogs when you are looking as sometimes they are a perfect fit. My Angel is 6 and her owners just could no longer have her as they had to move to a much smaller place. She was already trained as a retriever and housebroken and eager to please. She is such a great dog and I love that I didn't have a chewy puppy stage to go through with her. Not that I don't intend to get a pup.

Thanks I think she is pretty special too.

So where are you right now? I know that there are lots of breeders in Germany and the surrounding countries, and Russia has great poodles. We have a few members of the forum from overseas. What level of poodle are you looking for? Show or pet? I know that will make a difference too as to what all you are looking for.

We all love to talk poodle, so the more you let us know about your preferences the more we might be able to help.

My Storm had been bought (deposit down) by some people immigrating to America... It was too expensive/too much hassle for them to import him... It could also be a number of other reasons, why they didn't follow through...

If I were moving to another country (which I did in 1983), I would want to have a place to live and a job, before taking on the responsibility of a pet...
