Best puppy age opinions please.
Aloha all! Noodle comes home for his first vist next Wednesday for a few hours. He will then come every week for a bit until he is 9-10 weeks old and comes home for good.
My question is: at what age did you bring your puppy home to live with you and do you think it would have help him or her stay with the mom for a shorter or longer time?
I am fine with Noodle staying with his mom until 9-10 weeks like his breeder wants. My vet suggested 6 weeks to come home. Other people have said 8 weeks and one website even said 10-12 weeks.
Noodle is the smallest one in his litter so I think 9-10 weeks is great for him with short outings to my house in between for extra lovings. I am going to take him to the vet next Wed when he is visiting for a health checkup from my vet. (I want to get him pet insurance.)

I find it appalling that a vet would suggest 6 weeks. IMO 8 weeks is the bare minimum to leave mum but preferrably 10.

Cindyreef... Thank you so much! I forgot the word receptionist...it was my vet's receptionist. I will definitely ask my vet in person next week and see what she recommends.

In many states, it's illegal to sell puppies under 8 weeks old.
I prefer 8 weeks. Maybe 10 weeks for toy breeds but no later than 11 weeks.

I think toys are a little more delicate than the larger poos and 10 weeks, or longer, is good as long as they are being socialized with humans at the breeder's home (not shut up in kennels) It's kinda neat you get to take him for visits! I've never heard of that being done! I bet you're on pins & needles waiting.......happy happy happy!

Fifi, my spoo came home at 7 1/2 weeks. Who are you getting yours from? I live on Oahu. Are you on Oahu or another island?

I got my toy and 8 weeks and MAN did I regret it. She almost died from hypoglycemia. I definitely should have asked the breeder to keep her till 10 or 11 weeks. Toys are just so different from the bigger dogs.

I am on Oahu. The breeder is a good friend of mine. We only live 5 minutes apart. Noodle is a mini.

I have only had my mini for a week, and Shadow was 12 weeks old, when I bought him... He's is well behaved most of the time, bite inhibition is excellent, he's not afraid of people or other dogs, he doesn't mess in his crate, he hasn't cried at night, he's a dream to brush and comb, just stands quietly on the table, till I'm finished... I'm so happy to have gotten a poodle older than the norm.
The biggest problem I have is potty training... He'll hold it in his crate, but when I'm home, he just goes where ever, even though I take him outside every hour or so...

10 weeks sounds like a good compromise, especially as you get to "borrow" him. Wat a very good idea, letting him get to know you, and to know your home as a happy place, before he moves in full time.
