Noodle is a runt?!?
The breeder suggested that we think about the smallest one. He is just a bit smaller, no health issues known. He is the calmest, most cuddly, and sweetest one so far. They are four weeks and a few days. My breeder has been sick so tomorrow is the day we go see the puppies.
I am fine with a smaller dog...both parents are miniatures. I just want a healthy puppy. Is there such thing as two miniatures making a toy size? There are three boys and two girls in the litter.
Any suggestions?

I usually avoid the 'runt'. Runts are often not as healthy or vigorous as the others, so I would suggest watching the puppies carefully. If the puppy is only genetically a little smaller than he should act the same as all the others and there would be no problem getting him. With my puppy I almost chose the smallest puppy in the litter because she was so cute and vigorous and prancy, but I decided I wanted a boy and ended up with one of the bigger puppies. Not all small ones are unhealthy, but some can be. You should be able to see a difference at 4 weeks, but it becomes more pronounced at 6/7 weeks. You may show up and they are all asleep! Go for personality, but try not to choose yet. A lot changes between 4 and 7 weeks. Do you have to choose now?
You should be able to check their bites at 4 weeks, by the way. Take a camera!

Our Patches was the size of a leggy toy, who weighed six pounds her whole life, whose parents were both minitures, who we found out later was the runt of the litter. She also did not have a docked tail. She was a sweatheart of a dog who lived to be fourteen years old. She did have a heart murmur that was diagnosed around ten years old that she took a half a pill daily for, but never caused her any other health issues. She was a fiesty little thing that ruled our house.

I am not sure exactly what the breeder means but will post once I see the pups today.

The smallest puppy doesn't always stay the smallest. Not poodles, but years ago I whelped a litter of lhasas for my mother in law. There were 4 puppies in the litter....8 oz, two at 6 oz, and one at 4 oz. The 4 oz. puppy was so tiny! I fell in love and decided I would keep her. By one year of age she was built like a tank and there was nothing petite about her. I never finished her breed championship but did put a CD on her. She was awesome!

I believe that "Runt" is the wrong term. This term usually refers to an unhealthy& possibly fading pup. Small is fine, different sizes in a litter is normal, just as conception dates in a litter can be normal. Eggs can be fertilized on different days.
My dog Echo came from a litter where the smallest has turned into the tallest & might go over sized where the largest of the litter became the smallest all at 5 months.

Ugh! My poor breeder is not feeling well still so I probably won't see Noodle today either. On the bright side, each day that goes by the pups get older and have more personality so I will know more about Noodle when I see him. I am pretty set on the all black one but God may have other plans.

Noodle is a runt?!?
My Penelope came from parents who were both over 5 lbs and the other pups in her litter grew to be about the same. Penelope tops the scale at a whopping 3 lbs 4 oz soaking wet. She is by far the healthiest of all my poodles so size is not really the health determinate all the time.

My sister is the runt. She is the youngest and only grew to 5'0" and she is constantly complaining of some illness. I'm kind of glad my parents didn't get rid of her. Someone has to take the runt. I think they should go to the people with the biggest hearts!
