The merle gene also does not exist in chihuahuas. I have a "merle" chihuahua that was a rescue. He has chronic pancreatitis, liver problems, severe patella problems. He was horribly bred. He is my heart and I love him dearly. Actually personality wise he is the sweetest chihuahua I have ever owned but not the sharpest crayon in the box. I just feel bad because someone else's carelessness created a sweet dog that has to suffer the consequences!

Wow! I've learned so much from this thread! I never actually knew anything about merle dogs!
It bugs me how the first page was so sweet looking. It's so deceiving! If I ever get another dog, I know now to really pay attention to the health guarantee... It pretty much summarizes how much faith she has in them

Just came across this little guy on petfinder.... poodle mix puppy, given to a shelter because he's deaf. Looks like a merle to me! Poor sweet little thing!

Doesn't AKC question the 'merle' coloration? Just curious... it's been years since my mother-in-laws dogs!

Many bad breeders falsify AKC documents. I've worked with several humane societies that took down puppy millers who had all their puppies "AKC registered" - all those documents were falsified but looked like the real deal.
AKC might not even know this person has so called registered puppies. That is why it's vital to research and educate yourself before you buy a dog from anyone!

And puppyfind.com or nextdaypets.com is the two places you never ever go looking for a pet... it's bad breeder central.
