Hi, everyone,
We adopted a mini poodle from the shelter. He's our first dog and we adore him-he's perfect! However, we found out 2 weeks later that the shelter told us he was a year old, but he's at least three--not even sure how old,really. While naturally upset, we love him no less--obviously. I have a few questions if anyone could help:

1. Do we still feed him same foods (trying to switch to Blue Buffalo from Science Diet)?
2. Do we still take him to school? What is the expectation--do they still learn well when grown up?
3. He is not neutered--should we still do it? What kind of difference does it make--shelter was supposed to do it, but has not yet.

First of all...THANK YOU for adopting a poodle in need! Secondly, PLEASE post some pics...we LOVE pics!!!

YES...at a year old he should be eating adult food anyway, right? And BB is a good choice!

Yes! You can, indeed, teach an old dog (even though 1 or 3 years old is far from OLD!) new tricks! Plus, it will be a great bonding experience for you guys!

3. He is not neutered--should we still do it? What kind of difference does it make--shelter was supposed to do it, but has not yet.
DEFINITELY have him neutered!

Yes to all three, and 3 years old is still very young. Minis can live to be 15 so he has a lot of life left. I have also read but cannot says from experience that poodles retain the ability to learn thorough their entire lives. Mine is only a year old.

Congratulations on your new addition and I agree with the others - yes to all three questions.
When we adopt a pet, we aren't really sure about age and other things, the rescue/shelter is usually just guessing (unless the pet was an owner surrender) so don't be put off by the age difference. We adopted Lily last Memorial Day weekend and we were told she was about 1 or 2 yrs old, but our vet believes her to be closer to 4 yrs old.
