Today is Spay Day
Sammi has a 9:00 appointment with a vet I haven't met yet for her spay and umbilical hernia correction. I am a little nervous and ...sad I guess. Strange, but that's how I feel. Maybe because I feel it marks the end of her puppyhood in a small way. I will miss her too, as she is staying over night. This being my first dog, it's all new to me!
Please wish Sammi well.

I do wish Sammi well, and hope your mind is soon at ease. I know you can't wait for her to be back home with your family so you can pamper her like she deserves. The thought of any surgery or separation from our poodles is so hard, but you're doing the right thing for her. Know one more poodle person in New Jersey is thinking of her today. You can keep busy buying her extra toys and treats! Please let us know how she is post-op.

Hugs! It will be a hard, long day for the both of you. You might need have a pampering day for yourself. You could take a long bubble bath, paint your toe and finger nails, read a good book, watch some Lifetime movies, ...
My thoughts will be with the both of you. Please update us.

Sammi will be just fine I am sure, It is always harder on we moms and dads than it is on the pups. Just keep an eye on her urine for awhile and she may have to go more often also. When I had my Walter neutered, one of the self disolving stitches did not, and Walter developed a hitch in his get along when we would walk. Upon inspection I realized that one stitch was sticking into the inside of his groin and as soon as I pulled it out, no more skipping.

Huge mistake!
I think I made a big mistake choosing this vet for today's spay, despite my research. The place REEKED of dog and urine...the smell was overwhelming. When I cracked open the front door, Sammi took one sniff and refused to go in. She was sniffing and cowering the whole time, which is the opposite of her behavior at our regular vets office (she always pulls me into the vet). The smell was so strong that my eyes started itching and my asthma flared up!
It too bad, because all of the staff were so nice, and the vet seemed kind and knowledgable. I really wanted to just turn around and walk out, but I left her there anyway. The good news is that she should be able to come home today, if all goes well.

I was really nervous when we got our dogs spayed too; I had myself worked up especially with Maddy because Indy is such a strong dog, she's never had any health worries at all but Maddy seems to be allergic to some things and every time I took her to doggy daycare she seemed to have some sort of virus afterward, so I felt that she was a bit vulnerable. But she SAILED through her spay and my biggest problem was keeping her quiet and not bouncing off the walls for the 10 days. Also, in typical Maddy style she destroyed her cone and we had to keep repairing it, which she loved because she viewed destroying the repairs as a challenge My vet gave her a long-lasting pain injection, which was supposed to last for 24 hours but he said if she showed any discomfort, I was to bring her back for more pain control. But she was fine. I am thinking of you!

I am so glad that she will be able to come home today.
I fostered a dog for a month and had her spayed. I am a bit phobic when it comes to medical procedures, but it was much easier than I thought it would be. When I went to pick the dog up later the same day, the technician brought her out on a leash and I was surprised to see her walking as if nothing happened. She had a little bit of discomfort that night (in spite of pain meds), but overall it was really pretty easy. Hope everything goes just as smoothly for you.

I work at a vet clinic, and some days I walk in and it smells clean and sanitized, but sometimes dogs walk right in an urinate right on the front desk! We really do clean it up as soon as we can! Some days a sick dog will panic in the back and have explosive diarrhea all through his crate, even cleaning that up immediately (and dry heaving through it) that smell will still linger for an hour or so. See how it smells when you pick her up, it may have been a few scared patients.

My toy poodle was spayed when she a 8yrs and a couple months. I definitely worried about her since also had an open pyometra infection. They told me that she would spend the night to make sure she was kept quiet. I would have been ok with that except no one is there overnight. I told them unless it was absolutely necessary I would take her home that night. I know her best and knew she would stay quiet and calm and if something occurred I would take her to the ER myself. Luckily the vet was ok with that. She also did fine and the staff are very good. I can tell as she is willing to still go here. She had her teeth pulled when she was younger at a diff vet then when I went to her regular vet she was trembling which she never does. Anyway all should be fine, I always opt in for prelim bloodwork too.

I remember watching the clock til it was time to pick up Molly! I was a nervous wreck even though I've worked in a Vet's offices! It was like waiting for my child!LOL!
Don't worry yourself into a frazzle, and when you pick her up just know she'll be sooooo happy to be home again! You are right though....it's kinda like a 'rite of passage'/ milestone kind of thing isn't it?
