Ok I really love this dog but the biting has to stop. I know it's July the 4th and fireworks are going off but he just bit my 5 year old on the leg and left a mark didn't bleed but still...not to mention all the clothes that have been ruined. We have rawrides everywhere, kongs and my family room is cluttered with dog toys. He gets 2 20 minute walks a day and lots of attention. I'm lost I don't know what to do?? Any ideas? I'm starting class with him on the 7th. He's 14 weeks and big alreay he's about 23lbs...SO I can NOT have a big biting dog!! I need help!!!

He is going through the "mouthy" stage of puppyhood, it is quite normal for a pup his age. You are right to get answers to nip it in the bud...with mine, BITTER APPLE LOL!!! It is used mostly to keep pups from chewing on things, but you can also spray dirctly in the mouth, just 1 spray, when he does that and tell him "no bite" worked for mine! Also, when he is doing that to your hands feet whatever, pull back from him and make a high pitched noise simulating a dog yelp and discontinue playing/petting whatever you are doing, when he stops give loves and tell him good boy. Mouthy puppies can cause some damage with those sharp little teeth and I have kids as well, these methods work. The high pitched yelp is actually how one pup tells another, that is enough you are getting to rough, so it is in their nature to learn this behavior, so it makes it kinda easy lol, mother nature already gave him the instructions, you just have to read them to him! Good Luck!!! :curl-lip:

I know it's frustrating and I'm sure it's particularly difficult to keep your cool when your kids get hurt, but you've got to remember two things: 1. Nipping is normal puppy behaviour 2. Just because he's nipping now, does not mean he will be a "big biting dog" when he grows up.

To break your pup of nipping, make sure you are consistent with the corrections, and get your WHOLE family in on it. P4P recommended a high pitched yelp when he makes contact, I second the recommendation. You might also want to increase his exercise, but I know in the summer the weather does not always permit long walks.

All the best.

Vinnie is in the ending stages (I hope!) of the biting. He was soooooo awful. He has started losing his puppy incisors and big boy teeth are coming in and they mouthing has decreased dramatically. If he started chewing on me, I just put my hands away - in my pockets, under my legs, etc... and stopped playing. Typical puppy - he was off in a flash chewing on something else. My hands are just about healed!! :elefant:

OK...you can remind me later when I have had enough, but right now, I am so ready to experience the puppy stages.

Sounds like you have some good advice Jenspoo. This is exactly how I plan to handle my new little one.

I've heard one common game that you shouldn't play with a puppy is tug of war because it encourages biting and jaw strength. It also challenges who is leader of the pack since the strongest one becomes the leader. I think it also encourages rough play. You may not even play tug of war with him.

Just think, he will calm down soon with your consistent care. I hope Jilly doesn't become afraid of him and understands that he is still a baby and doesn't know any better.

We don't play tug of war...I just have never had a lg breed puppy before so a lot of this is new. You can tell he's just a big puppy but because of his size we sort of expect him to listen better...I know it's going to take a while but man last night was rough!

We had a long walk today and I gave him a frozen kong with yogurt and kibble in it yum! He's been messing with that for about 20 minutes while I cool down from the walk. Kids are taking a nap all is quiet!! YAY!
