I just dropped him off at boarding (I never thought I'd ever board a dog...but I know the people working there and I trust them), and I already miss him. I've never left him somewhere other than home since I got him. I've brought him on every vacation so far, but this one he wouldn't be allowed in the hotel or on the beach so its best if he's left here. I would have left him home or let someone I trust watch him but he is an escape artist and will squeeze through any tiny crack and go running wild looking for me (he has in the past when I went away for the weekend). I don't want to ruin my vacation worrying about my little man knowing the trouble he can get himself into...I'm too scared to risk it. I would never forgive myself if I ignored my gut instinct and something happened to him if I left him home. I know he'll be safe where he is now, I'm just worried about him not eating and not going potty because he wont do either when he is nervous. I hope he settles in well. I brought his favorite bed, blanket, stuffed animal, and treats to help him settle in faster. I'm going to be annoying and call every day to check on my baby. I dont know how I'm going to sleep tonight without him in bed cuddled up next to me

I know what you mean. I have never had to leave my dog (more than 12 hours). It is great you can leave her with people you know! I was worried sick leaving her (Bailey) for 12 hours. I do feel very confident that I have someone that can watch my dog if I need to go away,(Her trainer also does boarding) and not have to be worried. Hope you can enjoy your vacation and not worry too much.

He has the most adorable little face. I know how you feel. :(

I have to board my little ones next month while my husband has knee replacement surgery. He will have the second knee replaced six weeks later. I am not looking forward to having to board them.

I hope you have a great vacation. :D

I feel the same way. We just adopted Lily and we already have vacations plans for later in the summer. I am lucky to be able to board with my vet so I know she will be in good hands. I thought about a dog sitting service or someone that watches dogs at their home so she's have a home setting, but I am so afraid that Lily would get lost. (I guess I see too many Craigslist postings about petsitters losing dogs). Enjoy your vacation, and I'm sure Atticus will be having fun too. Just think of all the kisses you will get when you come home :)

Yes I'm back! Sorry I forgot to update you guys.

He was more than happy to come home after 5 long days, lol. He didn't eat very much at all while he was there. They even mixed in wet food (which I told them to do if he wasn't eating) and tried to hand feed him and he didn't want anything. He went potty occasionally, but only a couple times when he really really had to. They took him out of his room and held and cuddled him, which I think he enjoyed. They all loved him there!

I think he was just home sick and confused. Next time I'm sure he will be better now that he knows I'm not abandoning him.

When I went to Florida last year and since my sister (the girls doggysitter) came with me, I put the girls in a local kennel. I cried all the way to the airport! My mom phoned to check on them, and they were getting the princess treatment! I know it was hard to leave them, but in good hands - I wasnot worried. Glad to hear you are back - Atticus is so cute!

What I have been told to do with my parrot was to let her stay at the boarding facility for a night every once in a while. Just overnight or a day here and there so that if I ever had to leave her for an extended period, she was used to the place and would be more comfortable. I know it's no fun to leave him overnight or even a few hours a day once or twice a month, but it may help him relax and eat better. With a dog, you wouldn't heave to do it often, just ntil he became comfortable with it.
Just a weird thought. We do this sort of thing for birds because they can starve themselves to death so quickly. Or pick up weird neurotic behaviors. I wonder if that wouldn't help Atticus (and you) for any future extended stays.

Or, you can do what I do. I haven't taken a vacation in 12 years next September - and I took that one to stay home with my dog to have her puppies with mama there to hold her paw. :)

I know how you feel. I was always that way with Jake, and now next month, 8/28, it will be a year since I got Sunny and I have not gone anywhere without him. He will be fine.....relax.....just think how much fun it will be when you get back and pick him up!!!
