Hi, I am new to the forum. I have had at least one black standard for 12 years. The older dog passed away in January. She had the personality of a spiritually evolved wise old grandmother. Hard to describe I guess, but it she there was just something in her eye. The younger dog's personality changed, and she took over as lady of the house. Also a black standard. She still seems to mope around, and I think she I bored. When my fiance brings her Lhasa Apso they have so much fun. Watching them do everything in unison, with one big and black and the other small and blonde, is pretty comical.

Anyway, that has me thinking that I would like to commit to another poodle, BUT, two "big" dogs plus the Lhasa would be a bit much when we get married. That has me thinking Miniature Poodle, but I like the look of the standard. I guess I would like a big miniature, that looks like, and has the personality of the standard. Any ideas on whether this is realistic? I am not familiar with the personality of miniatures, but it does seem to me that many of the ones I have seen don't really look like small standards, there is something different about them--not sure what--shorter snout? So I guess my first question is the differences between the breeds other than height/weight, etc.

The second question, if what I am looking for is realistic, would be how to go about finding a large miniature or a very small standard.

I had a small standard in the past, she only weighed about 30 pounds full grown so she was pretty darn small. (Part of me questioned if she really was 100% standard or not, heh)

All you would need to do is look around and talk to the breeders. Ask them what sizes their dogs are, both sire and dam.

I was doing the opposite, I was looking for a large standard when I got my boy. I wanted to see sires and dams that were 25 inches or taller.

You might be able to look in rescues too. When I was considering a rescue, I did find quite a few smaller standards which didn't fit what I was hoping for.

How big is big to you?

I have a poodle of all three sizes and my Mini boy was a rescue and he is such a lovey goof ball and it like my Standard but not look wise at he was from a BYB.

Anyway, I would meet a few Mini's from breeders and look into rescues to see if they have something you might fall in love with.

Moose weighs 48lbs he is a 15mo/old male. He is WAY smaller than what we wanted We were told he would be BIG like his daddy (~70lbs) boy were we told wrong.

Even if he fills out he will most likely be under 60lbs still.

Poodle Lover

I have two standards my male is about 25" to 25.5" tall (depending on how I measure him). He is big chested, large boned very masculine poodle who weighs between 69 to 71 lbs depending on the season. My female is the about 23", small boned, very delicate girl who flunctuates between 39 and 42 lbs. I am sure you can find a small standard, especially if it's a female. I have met several miniature poodles and much prefer the personality and the look of standard.

I had to respond to this post, even though I normally just read. This may fit your needs!

"The (German) or Moyan (French) sized Poodle is in-between the Miniature and the Standard size. European countries have four sizes of the Poodles. In Europe, all the sizes of Poodles have the opportunity to show off their talents in the ring. Sadly, in the US, there are often Poodles ranging in size from 15" to 20" that cannot excel in the AKC show ring because of their size. UKC has recognized the whole Poodle, regardless of size and colour and although they show against their larger Standard counterparts they do have the chance to compete equally."

Poodles are the only dogs that are the same genetic breed reguardless of size. They are just bread to be a certain size, like large or small humans.

I do know of a breeder here in Indiana that has a litter of red moyan poodles at this time. They are beautiful!

do a google search for Vendetta Poodles and it guide you there. This lady grooms my poodles and has been a breeder for 40 years. Many of her poodles have finished in the AKC ring and I trust her completely. If you need more info just message me!

For what its worth, we've had standard owners tell us that our miniature has the personality of a standard. He's pretty calm most of the time, except when playing or hiking, etc. -- then he is very active. I think it helps that we give him a lot of exercise.
