Lightbulb Possible New spoo girl?

I have to admit.. I have been broody for a puppy for the last few months. It has come to a point where I am constantly looking through pedigrees, looking through breeder websites.... even calling up local training clubs!

I must admit I wasn't keen on getting a puppy, and neither is my mum. She reminded me about all the training that a puppy needs, and the time.
Being in university can sometimes mean I am out from 8 to 6, however my housemates have been good at taking Harley out for wee's in my absence.
However, my course IS animal based, and dogs can be allowed into lectures....
I currently take Harley out for one long walk and a short walk. He is so so sooo good on his walks, recall is pretty much perfect now, and he is so good with my housemates dog.

I really want to show spoos when I start my MSc in clincal animal behaviour (in 2 years) and I have a good job at weekends that I can book shifts whenever I wish. I have excess money and use it all on Harley (I spent 200 at Crufts!!!!)

My current situation:

I am about to have Easter off.. for 1 month, then a few more weeks of lectures and then 4 exams, spaced widely apart.

I called up a breeder, selling brown spoos, asking about whether she knew anyone with older pups. she told me about George Gold (anyone heard of him..of Canen poodles?)
having 2 bitches, one 10months, one 18months, the older born without a tail.
They are priced according to their age.. being slightly cheaper than a young puppy.

My problem is... I live as a student, and know I have lots of spare time in the next year at least (as my housemates are the year above me)
and my mother didnt actively say no towards another dog (as I live at her house during summer)
but I am still unsure whether it is a good idea.

I really need to practise on a dog that is conformationally sound (obviously not the tail-less girl) to practise handling, and show grooming, and I would love to have another dog for Harley to live with after living with another for a year.
However I am unsure whether this is justifiable?

Harley is the incorrect size, has poor conformation, is not KC breed registered (which a dog needs to be to enter handling competitions), and his hair has always been a bit odd.
I would love a spoo to practise with, enter shows with to gain experience, but that would not be a serious 'show' investment (thus the cheaper older puppy)
and is KC breed registered.

I definately need the grooming practise and am thinking of doing a summer grooming course in the interim between my current degree and the MSc, but I would like to have the experience of the coat change again, and trying out keeping longer hair.... if I do the course I wont have that experience.

I am totally serious about starting showing at my age (I will be 21 when I begin my MSc) and want to be ready for it!!!

do any of you have any comments on my thoughts , ideas and situation?
sorry about the long read!

Ive had a chat with the breeder of the bitches.
He says neither is show quality... the tailed girl has a slightly roached back, although he said she moves nicely...

I'm not sure whether I should still be thinking about this now he has said that... anyone know of KC rules on the quality of dogs in handling and grooming competitions?

Failing that he did mention his accidental (Im sure they are.. the lines he is talking about are 60+yrs old) border collie x poodles. he suggested since i showed an interest in agility and obedience that his 10week old pups may be a better suggestion....
tempted. but i want the poodley experience more! I just love my poos!!!!

I have seen somewhere a 4month old toy poodle, buuuut.. havent called them up yet :s

Does anyone have any thoughts AT ALL? :s

Personally the fact that he has bad conformation poodles and crosses would have me looking elsewhere! Not sure what others will say just my feelings if it was me!

True true I agree, he said that also. However the circumstances in which he has the crosses is a one off. a member of his family died, and she bred border collies, under the same kennel name. as they were trying to find homes, one of the male collies was able to gain access to a bitch whilst he was away....
there is a website, and the bloodlines of both poodle and bc are old.
he was very blunt and honest and said his poodles were bigger boned than the show poodles, and he found most people that bought off him use them for sporting purposes...

I have completely discounted the idea of a cross though...

however I am not sure whether my reasons are justified!?
I really want to give any potential serious show dogs I have in the future the very best chance to succeed, so getting a KC reg dog for experience is, in my mind, a good idea.. for practise and whatnot!
Plus an older puppy through to adult leaves the coat change, and I really want the coat change experience from a long haired point of view... since I pretty much kept Harley in a lamb cut...

any more views?

right.. i have had a good think about this. and I would like another poodle... however I will think more seriously about it in 2 weeks time, but until then I will keep an eye out for any older pups, and will contact breeders to ask if they would 'keep' a pup til a certain time. I have found a nice apricot litter but am going to look into their lines to see whether getting one, sort of as foundation stock, would be a good idea... acting as experience..but sort of serious too....

I love the reds and apricots so would like to show/breed them as I feel they are under represented in good quality stock. I would love to improve their quality in britain at least. i know some of you in the US and canada have some stunning reds and apricots, but i am yet to see any vivid yet winning dogs over here of those colours.
so thats my goal!

my other goal..in later life... is to finish a spoo, cord it, and then earn more show titles with cords!!!but that is a dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know i'm starting early..but I am a doggy person through and through, and my career will ve all dog based!!!!!!!!!!
