Default Best Bicycle Leash for Spoo

Hey guys,

My fiance and I are getting our first poodle next week. We both will bike to work nearby in the summer and then go for a bike with the doggie at lunch. We were wondering what the most stable / best bike leash mechanism is, because we don't want to instantly biff if the poodle pulls at all.

Canadian Tire sells this device called the Springer, it's actually a safety device because you sure don't want your dog pulling you into traffic. But biking is an EXCELLENT way to exercise your dog! Once you and the dog are used to it, anyway.

Oops, posting at the same time. we have the Springer and its design is great so that incase your dog pulls, it won't yank either of you. And you can get get an extra clamp to attach one to each of your bikes, then you can easily swap it back and forth. It goes right under the seat and is really easy to use...of course, my dogs would rather ride in the bike trailer.

We have two walky dogs for our two and love them. Lily(the non poodle APBT) is super strong and will pull you along, to the point you don't have to pedal. They have held up very well, and we've never been pulled over by them. Both dogs have good leave it commands, which helps when a stray cat runs across our path.

How much did the Springer cost you? I'm interested in biking with my girl once spring rolls around. The search didn't turn anything up at the Canadian tire website, and googling springer dog brought up a product page saying it was $99. Yikes!

One thing to keep in mind if you are getting a puppy is you really shouldn't be biking (or runnning) with the dog until it's fully grown and its growth plates in the joints have closed (for a large dog this can be anywhere from 18 months old to 2 years).

I think I paid somewhere around the 80 dollar mark for mine, but I've had it for about four years and it still look and operates as if it's brand new. I would call around to your local pet stores to see if they carry anything like it, or could order one for you. Maybe then you could use a coupon/get sale price.

Keep in mind, aside from the initial purchase price, I also have had to buy products to protect my dog's feet. One wears boots and the other one gets a special lotion applied to the paw pads before running so there are some further expenses. That being said, I enjoy biking much more than a walk or a jog and my dogs do too!
