Update--Wonderful new home!
For those of you who might remember this thread from a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to share the good news. MISTY HAS A NEW HOME!!!!!! I am absolutely delighted. She is going to be living with very good friends of mine. This is the most perfect home imaginable. Here's the story.
From the moment that I got Misty, a good friend and fellow poodle owner took quite an interest in her. She came to meet her, was constantly asking about her and even told me that she was praying that Misty would find just the right home. She also talked about taking Misty herself. She seemed pretty serious one day when she dropped by twice with her husband so that he could meet Misty. But she/they decided that the time was not right because their standard poodle had a serious illness. Bringing in a second dog when their dog was both sick and not used to living with another dog didn't make sense. I was actually surprised that they even considered it.
Just a week ago, their dog looked like he was doing very well and maybe would be with them for quite a while. But then on Monday morning (Jan 30), he collapsed and had to be euthanized. The death of a much loved pet is always a sad thing. But it opened up a wonderful opportunity for Misty. And Misty's opportunity for a new home was an answer to my friend’s prayers, even though the way her prayers were answered was not what she was expecting!
Misty will be an only dog living in an empty nester home where there is lots of love floating around waiting to land on some lucky poodle. They are committed poodle people, having had 2 poodles previously (one at a time). To top it all off, they are good friends so I will be able to keep in touch and see Misty regularly. This sweet dog deserves the best and she will be getting the very very best!
Next week, the sweet girl will be spayed. Then we will allow enough time for recovery before she goes off to her new home!
The process of helping Misty find a new home was definitely an interesting experience for me. I got all sorts of help from my vet, my groomer, the local poodle rescue group, a local pet sitting and dog walking service that publicized her availability, a neighborhood email list, the local newspaper (we were “pet of the week”) and lots of dog park friends. Thanks also to this forum, especially Plumcrazy, for support and advice.
I spoke to an interesting assortment of people who inquired about Misty, including:
-- one family with a Jack Russell who Misty distinctly disliked (not the right home)
-- one family with an adult standard poodle that I thought was going to be perfect. But then I found out that their spoo had never been socialized with other dogs, and he had no idea how to relate to Misty (not the right home)
-- one family with a child who had an allergic reaction, apparently as a result of spending half an hour in my house with 3 poodles (not the right home)
-- 4 or 5 women who wanted Misty but their husbands didn't (not the right homes)
-- one wife who came home from shopping to find that hubby had met 2 women and 5 dogs in the woods and brought the odd assortment home to meet the family. She was considerably less interested in Misty than he was, and coming home to find 2 people and 5 dogs in her house probably didn't help (not the right home)
-- one woman who had never owned a dog before and had no understanding about how to welcome a dog into her home. She was disappointed when Misty stood at the door anxiously waiting for me to come pick her up (not the right home)
-- one woman who came to meet Misty just a couple of hours after I heard that my friends’ dog had died (might have been a good home, but…)
It has been quite an adventure. I can’t tell you how happy I am that Misty will be living with my good friends! It is an answer to my friend’s prayer and to mine too.
