this happened Sunday at 1:00am... I am pasting the story as I wrote it two hours after it happened.
i woke up cause Bonzai was making a weird sound... I realized she was growling. A strange, low low sound that I've never ever heard. And I realized i'd heard something from the doorknob. So I got up to check the window from my son Talon's room, thinking maybe it was a dog. I looked out and there was a man there with a key trying to unlock the front door. I didn't think, I just banged on the window hard, and he spooked and walked around toward my bathroom window. I ran and got my phone and came back to see if he left. He was peering right into talon's window! Into my face! I banged on the glass in his face twice, hard, and yelled "go on! Get out of here!" and he backed off into the light, showing me something in his hands. I shouted "I don't care, get out here! The police are coming!" He dropped something in talon's wagon and hurried off.
I called my dad first and just said "someone tried to get into the house!" He told me to call the police and I said I am, but wanted him here. I called the police and they asked his description. I said tall, lanky, loose-fitting black pants, black hoodie, blue eyes. They knew exactly who he was, Nick something, and said they'd just stopped him in the area.
They came immediately. One officer picked him up right away and the other came to my house... the man is mentally disabled, apparantly, and thought he was at his house... but then he told the officer that he'd broken light bulbs in my shed, so he left money to pay for it. There wasn't anything wrong in my shed, just a box knocked over, but unopened. He didn't even knock down the huge spiderweb at the top of the shed.
He left a $5 bill, rolled up and smashed flat in the wagon and a keyring with a broken gold key and a silver key (officer said to a lock box). The keyring had a label, it had a nearby address on it.
Because he's mentally disabled he was taken to a hospital in an ambulance to determine his mental state. We probably can't press criminal charges except maybe trespassing. Thank god for Bonzai, I've never heard her growl before and I only woke up because it was such a strange sound. She didn't bark, just growled super deep in her throat and stared at the door.
Who knows what might have happened if she hadn't woken me up!
