Mod: Feel free to move this thread. I am not sure where to post this but I think it is an important alert for my fellow poodle owners because a coyote was spotted near a popular off-leash dog park.

A member of the San Francisco Professional Dogwalkers Association spotted a large full grown male Coyote yesterday at the bend before you head around the lake at Stern Grove. The Coyote circled back to where all the folks with the small dogs sit at the fire pit. A coyote that is in the daylight hours and not leaving the area where people are is a dangerous animal.

Coyotes frequently hunt during the day, that is not a sign of an unhealthy coyote. The fact that he is confident around humans is not a good thing. He needs some lessons in respect. Many big cities have resident coyote populations. They tend to be shy, people simply don't know they are there.. are mistake them for stray dogs.

I had a visiting coyote for several years when I lived in Vancouver, WA who frequently spent his evenings in front of my garage catching insects who were attracted the light above the door. He didn't bother me, would run if he thought I was around. I didn't bother him and had no problems with him. On more than one occasion I had people comment to me about my dog who waited for me in front of the garage. I never, not once ever had anyone mention that there I had a coyote as a visitor.

I also had a coyote for several years where I currently live. He sat at the end of my goat pens every morning and watched me do my goat chores. Nice guy, didn't ever bother the goats. Did a lot of mousing and squirrel hunting. I feel asleep once on a gorgeous day and when I woke up he was about 15 feet away from me.. mousing. I suspect that someone shot him as he disappeared. His replacements were not as respectful and I had an altercation between my 2 jacob sheep and a coyote bitch with older pups. Thankfully.. the jacob girls gave the coyote family a few lessons in respect. That was a year ago.. and so far no further problems with them. I was lucky. Jacobs are a primitive breed of sheep and they can/will fight if need be. If the coyote family would have gone after goats... the outcome would have been a whole lot different.

An awareness of a coyote presence may help ward off problems.. but coyotes are really common, people just usually aren't looking for them.

Anyway..nothing wrong with a coyote during the daytime, but there is increased risk of problems with a coyote who doesn't have respect for humans.

Coyotes are a problem in Nova Scotia. A few years ago a young woman was killed by a pack in one of the provincial parks, in the middle of the day. They have lost their fear of humans. They have also been stalkings of humans by coyotes reported.

I think that Being cautious and aware is very important.

Wow, I have never heard of coyotes killing a human. We have a den nearby. I rarely see them but there is one bold one that will not leave if he sees me. I had a fright one night. I walked out in the dark to light the BBQ. The gas probably built up a little too much and it lit with a bang. A few yards away I could hear the yips of the pack; they were startled by the woosh of the gas igniting. Scared me silly.

I don't feel any more threatened by a coyote then I would an unfamiliar dog. There are individual coyotes who have lost their fear of humans, but as a whole, most are shy and try to avoid people. If they didn't, they wouldn't survive.

Taylor Mitchell was a young musician who was attacked and killed, during the daytime and with other people nearby. I don't know if they ever determined the reason for the attack.. what went wrong. It wasn't normal or typical coyote behavior.

Again, it makes sense to be aware... but usually there are far more out and about then people realize. Guess in most cases, I'd just assume they were there to be on the safe side.

You are a lot braver than I am, if an unfamiliar dog was following me I would not be as worried as I would be if it were a coyote following me. I also do not think that it is the shy ones that are the concern, it is the bold ones that have lost their fear.

I truly believe that people need to take care whenever they are someplace where they may encounter wild life. Extra care needs to be taken if there have been reported sightings of animals, especially one who are know to kill pets, can be aggressive and have killed and injured humans in the past. Coyotes are very intelligent creatures, they are not going to hang around an area for very long if they are not having their feeding needs met "If they didn't, they wouldn't survive". If they are being spotted where there are humans and they are not frightened, and there is a food source (those well fed dogs), I think you are being very naive to think that there is nothing to worry about.

Yaddaluvpoodles,

The sense I am getting from your posts, is that there is nothing to be concerned about. If I am reading into this wrong, I am sorry.

schnauzerpoodle,

Thank you for posting this, if I lived in your area, I would want to know about this, so that I could be more aware.

This is an article about the attack. They do state that they do not know why the coyotes attacked. One part said that there was a slight chance that the coyotes had rabies. This was published before the autopsies (I do not think that is the correct term, but I hope you know what I mean)on the coyotes were conducted. Later reports stated that the coyotes did not have rabies.
