I think possibly if you shave your poodles face many times the true coloring comes out. LIke it will be a lighter color, a faded black, silvering etc.... if it is still fairly solid then you might have a solid black. It also helps to now the history at least the parents of your dog & then any other history.
Like my Mini is a Black Abstract & her color will hold. Her mom is a Black & white parti, siblings in that litter had solid black. I have only found some ancesters further back that were blacks, whites, black & white parti, brown & white parti's. On the Sire side much harder since he is either a Silver or a Blue & has been changing colors since I started grooming that dog at 4 months of age. His ears were brownish, his body was black but not jet black. He is starting to clear & every time I see him to groom he is getting lighter & lighter. His face though has a definite Silver to it even as a pup. So, knowing some of the history helps figure things out.
