Yikes! I just came home from walkign Cosmo. We live in the Phoenix suburbs, fairly older suburbs that have not been wild desert or farmland for over 25 years The square mile we live in(Phoenix is grids) is bounded by three six lane arterials and the freeway. The major shopping mall is on our southern boundary along with other major commerce. This is not wild animal territory!

Across the desert belt from our neighborhood is a horse acre lot neighorhood. We've walked through here daily for the ten year we live here. Cosmo and I are happily walking along this morning when he stops. As i try to figure out what's got him scared(I'm looking for a shadow or blowing leaf mind you) i see something move ahead and then realize I"m looking at a coyote chasing something through the next yard we're about to walk by. YIKES!!

Fortunately he was going the same way we were and didn't see us. I know coyotes typically won't come after a person but 1) i had cosmo with me and was afraid he might come after the dog and 2) as this is not typical coyote territory I anticipated he may not act predictably. We turned around and headed the other way while I hoped he didn't see us or catch scent of us. THere was a corner ahead so we turned up there to head home.

Two cars stopped to warn me "COYOTE!! Get inside with your dog!"

holy moly. what a way to start the day! wonder how long he's going to be visiting our 'hood....

I'm so glad everything turned out well. Probably the coyote was so fixated on whatever he was persuing, he never noticed you or Cosmo. I was walking my two little poodles last spring, when a neighbor came out of her house to suggest that we head back home, because the local police were keeping tabs on a bear that had been spotted in the area. Needless to say we did.

How is Cosmo doing these days? I did respond to your PM, but I had to try several times before if finally went. Hope you got it.

I guess that's where the name of your hockey team came from haha!

We have coyotes all over the place where I live, as I live on the outskirts of the city. However I have never been afraid of them, they always run away when they see me or my dogs. I guess it would be a different story if they came closer than 30 feet, I would feel a little uncomfortable then. I had a run in with a huge porcupine the other day, now that was scary!

Coyote and Fox are frequently in my neighborhood along with moose and more recently, black bear. When we take our puppy out the door we scan for critters as they are often just outside, dining, napping, or just traversing in the yard. Whatever they are, give them room, remain calm and do not run giving the impression you're prey. Calmly extricate yourself and your puppy from the scene. And, be aware that there are critters who do not always play by the rules.

Boats as an FYI the forum programming has been dredging up ancient threads as suggested reading thse days. This thread is ten years old and most of the original participants are no longer active. I would suggest you check dates on threads before posting in them and starting a new thread if the topic matters to you. Some people will just look at old dates and move on rather than combing through to see whats new. Either way I am happy not to have bears around, nor venomous snakes. We are starting to see coyotes coming to Long Island and if they end up in my area I will put coyote rollers on the top of my fences.
