After several weeks of nightmarish pain and ambivalence, we made the decision to put our baby to sleep today. Marcello was the best dog I ever knew. He went to sleep like he lived his life - like a gentleman.
I hope we'll be together again some day.
Thank you all for your support and love. This site is so helpful for people going through difficult times with their dogs.

Sincere condolences and in your sorrow I hope you realize how unselfish letting Marcello go truly was. You gave him the best gift ever. And be assured, he will live in your heart and in your thoughts forever.............and maybe someday, when you are ready, he will send a new emissary in his stead to make you smile again!

I am so sorry. As Molly says, it is the last and kindest gift we have to give - Marcello is at peace and free of pain. So many of us here have faced the same decision, and felt the same grief that you are going through. For some of us the emptiness of a house and life without a dog is so overwhelming we must bring another home as soon as possible; others need many months or years for their hearts to heal before they can even contemplate it. I hope that when the time is right for you that you will share all the love and wisdom that Marcello taught you with another canine soul in need of a loving home, and that in the meantime there is comfort in remembering all the happy years you shared.
To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden,
where doing nothing was not boring- it was peace.

Deepest condolences on your loss. When they are in pain, it is the greatest kindness an owner can give their beloved pet. Nothing can take a way all the memories and in time, they become less painful to recall. Rest in Peace, Marcello.
