One night I was searching Standard poodle breeders (something I had been doing for a few months), when I stumbled upon Melanie's website. I was really excited to see a litter of 8 week old poodles, many of them silver (my favorite color). I was looking for a girl because that is just our family preference, and there were several adorable girls available.

Of course, Maizie was the prettiest to me, but she was destined to be a show girl so she was going to a show home. I called Melanie and we talked a bit. She said she had families coming out to pick their puppies that weekend and she would call me to tell me what was left, but it would probably be "Pink" or "Purple" (Maizie was "Multi").

I would have been thrilled with either of those girls, but when Melanie called me on Saturday night to say it was Multi who was available because Orange was chosen for the show home, I was so excited! I talked with Melanie about her personality and asked if she would be a good fit for my home. She felt that she really would; she said she had an outstanding personality as well as show quality. I told her I would think about it and get back to her ASAP.

I slept on it and called her back the next day and said if she would sell her to me on a pet contract, I would give her a really good home. I would also need her to be shipped because my mother has cancer and I didn't want to stray too far from home. Melanie kindly agreed, and the journey to Maizie began!

Getting her here

It was not easy, what with unpredictable summer weather, but we finally got a flight from Salt Lake City to San Francisco on a cool Saturday morning.

I was so excited driving to the airport!

Walking to United Cargo:

I waited over an hour (seemed like several hours) and she finally arrived!! I expected her to be really scared, but she just wanted to meet me and give me kisses :)

We got home and she had to meet her sister (my Maltese, Zooey) and her aunts (my parents' Golden Retriever, Fiona and Shih Tzu, Scout). Here she is meeting Zooey for the first time:

Maizie was 10 1/2 weeks old when she came home. She weighed 13.6 lbs.

She pretty much made herself right at home! The only form of stress I saw was that she cried in her new crate for the first couple of nights. She quickly learned that she is secure here.

The other dogs were a little jealous at first, but there was some "parallel play."

Maizie really settled into the routine this week. She got her 12 week shots. She is 15" and 15.5 lbs. She is outgrowing her stroller that I've been using for neighborhood walks.

Fiona started playing with her! It's so fun to watch them. All of a sudden, they're best friends.

Maizie seemed to have really grown up this week. Last night she slept on my bed :angel2: We have worked her up to being left in the crate for 1/2 hour while we run out on short errands. She is doing fabulously on housebreaking. She only had a some accidents a few days after her arrival, but none for at least a week now.

Today for the first time Zooey played with her! Zooey was chasing her all over the yard because Maizie had a trachea chew. Then this evening they played without any props! Also, Zooey cuddled up to her on the bed this morning. Warms my heart! I knew a new pup would be hard on Zooey, but I was confident she would accept her.

This week Maizie has enjoyed leash training and socializing! She has met a few children, lots of adults, and a few friendly dogs. We have been hanging out at Peet's Coffee because that's the highest traffic place in our neighborhood when we take our morning walk.

We're back to having her sleep in her crate just so she is more settled in the night, but I do let her up on the bed in the early morning, after she potties, and she goes back to sleep. She is very snuggly at this time

Maizie's house training regressed a little because I've had to work a bit and my mom doesn't watch her as vigilantly as I do. However, she's only had two pee pee accidents (both same day) this week. And look how she can potty on leash :)

Our other issues we're working on are jumping on guests (again, it's when I'm not here--she doesn't do it with me at all) and leaving my mom's Shih Tzu alone (unlike the other two dogs, she has no patience with babies!).

Hopefully by next week's update I will have a new camera so my pics will be better!

No potty accidents this week!

Bought clippers (Andis AG2) for fft with disastrous results--overheating clippers even with cool lube, wiggly puppy, messy, etc. Will let a professional do her--turns out clipping is NOT my thing.

Walking on leash is going great. Still meeting lots of new people in town.

After my half-a** clipping job. Luckily, she has forgiven me and is playing with her toys at the moment.

Maizie is gorgeous! I've told Abbey that some poodles are lucky enough to have their own pools. Don't give up on the grooming, I'm still not great but so much better than when I first tried. Groomers are great if you are lucky enough to find a good one, where I am, the last groomer charged me 130.00 and I could have done as good. I first purchased an Andis and found it hard to handle, then I got a whal bravura and love it.
Enjoy your sweet little girl...

Maizie is just the cutest and smart too. She does need more attention at this age because there is so much to learn. Sounds like you are on top of things.
Try the grooming in small increments, both you and Maizie will have to get used to this and you have good clippers to use.
Love the picks, Maizie is a charmer.

Maizie is now 18" tall and 22 lbs. She got her 3rd puppy shot/worming and received a glowing health report. Vet estimates she will be 45-50 lbs. We discussed her rabies vaccine (she will be getting it at 6 mos.) and her spay (at 1 yr.). I will have to find training and grooming that can accommodate my vaccine schedule for her, or we'll just have to wait on grooming. She'll just be a shaggy girl for a while ;)

Only one pee accident early in the week because I left the family room during her play time for about 5 minutes and didn't leave the door to the patio open  She is always choosing to go out if it's open.

My sister, my brother-in-law, my almost 3 year old nephew and their 3 Chihuahua mixes visited for a few days. Maizie's playfulness and love was a little much for my nephew, but she had fun with him and the other dogs.

We've been having a heat wave, which has been wilting our hydrangeas. I turned on the hose to water them and Maizie showed much interest. So, I put the sprayer on the mist setting and she started playing in it. She jumps into the mist, bites it, and gets soaking wet. It's so fun--I'll have to get a picture of that soon.
