I have long story to tell so if you don’t like reading then just go ahead and read this first paragraph and answer my question please. How much do you feed your poodle? I am asking this because my miniature poodle never finishes his meals that I give him and I’m afraid that he might be eating too little.
My dog Max is a miniature poodle, 8 years old, and weighs 15 lbs. I've been free feeding him his whole life crappy food Pedigree until recently. I have been on food trials for 2 months trying out to figure out which food he accepts. My family used to always give him table scraps which probably made him into the picky & finicky eater that he is today. He has always been on the thin side and never been a big food motivator.
Out of all the brands that I have tried I've come to realize that he accepts three of them which are Merrick, Evo, and Acana/Orijen. I would like to use those brands as part of a rotation diet switching brands every time the bag runs out. I buy the 30lb bags for my 6 dogs and the bag will usually last about 3-4 weeks.
All of the bags according to their labels say that a 15lb dog should eat 1 cup per day. I have a lot of trouble getting him to eat 1 cup a day. I've tried everything that I can think of and I’m fed up. Usually when I change brands he will eat his 1cup per day for like a week. After that he will not finish his food. I feed him twice a day (½ cup am and ½ cup pm). I recently tried adding a little bit of water to his food and it actually worked. He finished his food for like another week until yesterday. Now he’s only eating about half of what I serve every meal which would be ¼ cup instead of ½ cup. I don’t know what to do. He is currently on Classic Merrick and I still have another 3 weeks till the food runs out. I don’t want to use canned food because it’s too expensive and he will build up a lot of tarter on his teeth.
I am worried because he is almost eating as much as my toy poodle Trixie. Trixie is a toy poodle and weighs 9 lbs. I give her ½ cup per day. I would probably estimate that Max eats anywhere from 2/3 to 3/4 cup a day. On bad days he will just eat ½ cup which I think is too little.
He is healthy because I’ve already taken him to the vet. He has had blood tests, abdominal X-rays, urine tests, and had his teeth surgically cleaned like 2 months ago w/no extractions. He is on monthly heartworm prevention.
So how much do you feed your poodle? I would like all kinds of answers just to get a general idea. I prefer that people with toy poodles and miniature poodles give me some feedback please.
