It is such an enviably good thing to be Rain! And to have you as her photographer/owner. You don't begin to know how tempted I am to make the long drive to the Keys to see her when I visit my family in Ft. Lauderdale this winter. Lovely photos of a perfectly idyllic life!

Gotta have Creedence Clearwater Revival playing "Born on the Bayou" as the soundtrack for those pics!

If I ever make it to Florida with Lily I hope we can come play with you and Rain. Even though you guys can gets lots more hurricanes than we tend to, those pics are so wonderful to see compared to the carnage around Long Island the last two weeks. They made me smile. Thanks.

We have regular, routine preparations for hurricanes here, every year, starting in June. The houses, for the most part, are built to withstand storms. There is still damage, if we get a bad one. Our house was essentially destroyed in 1998 (Georges), and had to be rebuilt. We don't have the cold though. It was bad up there, I know ....
Glad to know you're alright & smiling; thank you !

Thanks for your good wishes. Thanks also for sparing some utility line men for us. All of the out of state guys were awesome. The crews that got my neighborhood back on line were from Michigan.
I think we will have to develop better plans for events like this. The really hard part was when it snowed significantly (several inches) the week after Sandy. It was cold outside and inside! We could see our breaths in the house. Lily wore a sweater all week.

Rain has a gorgeous look, and how much I love seeing dogs celebrating nature with their owners! I live on the Gulf Coast, too, and am looking forward to hiking this way with Sugar. Do you worry about snakes? We've encountered water moccasins here a few times. Are you concerned about her chasing wildlife, or is her recall that solid? I once had a tense moment with my husband's corgi taking off after a rabbit and disappearing in the undergrowth. Thank God she did come back after a few terrifying moments!

Yes. Rattlesnakes are here. I do not take Rain into the hammocks 'til the temperature gets a little cool (snakes are slower then). I have also thought that leaving the thick hair on her legs may give a little protection (far from failsafe though). It's a chance we take ... so far, so good (including the Weimaraners before Rain). I occasionally see snakes in the water, but I think they are mostly just water snakes & not Moccasins.

She will chase; 0 recall when this happens. She wants to hunt more and more, and her range and ability to get through the cover is increasing. I have to find bigger spaces to turn her loose. There are risks -- always; she loves to hunt; I cannot take that away; I will let her go and try to keep her as safe as I can.

I've lost a dog or two in the wilds, sometimes for hours. Luckily, they always returned, eventually, often exhausted, but with big grins. I, of course, in tears, tell them how great and good they are, and how happy I am to see them.
