I haven't been on PF for so long, partially because I haven't really had a dog lately!
I'm off at college living in a dorm with two of my best friend, but no Desmond! It's rough, I gotta admit. I have been gone for about 3 weeks, but I went back for a quick visit last weekend... man I hadn't realized how much I had missed Desmond! Now I just can't wait to see him again, but I won't for another 2-3 weeks. :(

I am going through serious dog-withdrawal, guys. I barely even know what to do with myself without dogs around. I kind of forget how much I miss them what with the hectic schedule of college and homework and things, but as soon as I see a dog walking down the street it hits me that it's been SO long since I've interacted with one. I have Des as my desktop background to keep me sane, but I still scroll through pictures and videos of him to torture myself, I guess.

ughhh I miss my baby so mu-hu-hu-huchhhhh

Aw, that would be awful! I know the feeling, we were dog-less for about a year before we rescued Auggie and Mimi. That was the longest I had been pet-less since I could remember!

BTW, getting a new calendar going...have a favorite pic or two of Desmond you would like to submit?

Best of luck at college...poodle hugs!

Nothing is going to be the same as being with Desmond but if you're in need of doggie contact you might consider taking a shelter dog out for a walk on occasion. Shelter staff never have enough time to provide individual attention to the dogs so you'd be doing a wonderful service. Maybe you could take a few college mates with you and take several dogs out! The need never ends.

I live in a city with lots of small colleges. We also have a dog park. It is quite normal to find college students hanging around the dog park visiting the dogs. Is there a dog park near your campus? If so, you could go get a dog fix there. :)

My oldest daughter looked at Reed College in Portland OR because they have campus dogs owned by the college and she loves dogs, too. She didn't end up there, but I thought it was a really nice idea.

Desmond is safely at home with my mom, stepdad, and my sister's dog. He latched onto my stepdad, who works mostly from home and has become Desmond's security blanket while I'm gone. :( So cute! He misses me though, my mom tells me that the first week or so, he would sit at the top of the stairs at night, looking for me and waiting for me to come to bed. D:> How sad is that??

Ohh, I definitely have plans to volunteer at a local shelter frequently to get my dog fix. :) Hopefully there is somewhere around here that I can go to where I can help socialize, bathe, groom, train, etc the dogs (or photograph them for adoption pages online). I would LOVE to help out any way I can!! I was planning on jumping right into looking at shelters, but I think I underestimated the amount of work I would have... yikes, I'm always busy! I will have to make time :) I miss being around dogs so much, it won't be long before I pencil in a time in my schedule for volunteer work.

I rarely post, as I don't have a poodle (yet!) but I've been lurking for quite some time... Creepy? Lol!

I second the others. While I was at college and pining for a pup I began to volunteer for the local humane society about once a week (usually more if I had the time to stop by). I did a lot of socialization and a bit of training with rambunctious labs and got to play with all the adorable puppies. I even remember when a black standard poodle came in, he was found wandering on the side of a highway, tagless and no microchip. I wanted to take him home sooo bad!

It wasn't the same as coming home to my own furbabies, but it gave me a healthy dose of "doggy" for the week. Plus, I got the added benefit of helping dogs in need AND meeting some great people/references, AND (as if that isn't enough) it looked/looks great on a resume!

Sweet Des!

I missed having a dog SO much when I first moved to college, sometimes I would even go to PetsMart or Co. and pretend to shop (or buy toys for my doggies at home) and interact with every dog I could while there. It worked as a quick fix. :)

Concentrate on your semester, and breaks will come up faster than you'd think... I promise!

I miss Beau when he's gone at the groomers for three or four hours, much less an entire semester. I'm heading up to the Bay area soon for a four-day old-time music festival, which doesn't compare to an entire semester but will be the longest I've been away from my velcro baby since we got him. Bet he hangs out at the top of stairs every day waiting for me to come through the front door, just like Desmond does for you. Our poodles sure have us wrapped around their paws . . . .

Desmond is lucky my mom & stepdad take such good care of him, but I still think he misses me spoiling him with attention relentlessly throughout the day!! I know I am a little bored without any animal interaction (forgot how much easier & how relaxing it is to be with an animal for a while, people can get trying to be around...) so I obviously can't wait to see him again.

My mom e-mailed me this morning, telling me that she had brushed him out a few days ago, but now it is raining nonstop in Nashville... ohhh god... he is gonna be SO gross when I come back on Fall break. Unshaven, unwashed, unbrushed, and STINKY!
