Harry bum shuffling. It's funny to look at but recognised its the anal glands needing expressing. Never done it before and heard it can get infected so went to the vet to witness it being done. Anyway it's been only 2 weeks ago and he is doing it again. I squeezed in the same way described by the vet. A bit came out after a few attempts.

I didn't think expressing often as necessary.

An occasional raw bone would help with this. Swizzle will do this after grooming. He is always itchy then.

It all depends on your dog. Most can get by with having it done by the groomer when they get their haircut. Some of our clients come in between grooming a to have us express them also. Some dogs never need the expressed and come in always empty.

Just make sure when you do it, to be careful not to over attempt or squeeze to hard, you can injure your dog and cause gland leakage. I always give my self a 3 attempt rule. If I haven't gotten anything out after 3 tries, I tell the owner to take them to the vet.

It's possible that either your dog is scooting because hair has overgrown and is causing tickling, or you are not in the right area. Some dogs anal glands full higher, some lower and some further back.

I remember when I first was learning how to groom (I was 17) it took me a week before i successfully expressed glands, and my mom makes fun of me still because I came home that day all excited. I think my problem was I was afraid to hurt the dogs so I wasn't squeezing hard enough.

Don't sweat typos. If every post had to be grammatically correct few of us would post. I bet he was just itchy after his groom. If it is his glands he will keep doing it and he will probably do it more often. I would be very surprised it it was his glands since they were done so recently.

Did the vet say why he needed them expressed again? Was there an underlining reason? I am of the mind set that noone expresses my pets anal glands but my vet.

Didn't say why but we did discuss poop consistency. Admittedly this was not the main reason for the visit. Main reason was he was bitten by a mossie ....in the spot no boy wants a mossie bite!! Plus inflamed ears! My boy... Vet bill racking up
