Theo back from toxicity
Last night at 6 I gave theo his trifexis with a meal. By 9:30 he couldn't fully open his eyes and when he did he couldn't focus. He didnt respond to his name. He looked drugged and disoriented. He plopped down and slept. He laid on me, which is unusual. He also had mild tremors several times. His heart rate was normal. He did eat his treats before bedtime, in the middle of this episode. (at 11) We looked it up and these are the symptoms of trifexis toxicity. Theo weighs 41 pounds and the dose he took was 40-60 pounds. I think he overdosed because his weight is on the cusp of that dose.
The vet said to bring him in if he got worse. By 12:30am he jumped into bed (we had kept him on the floor to be safe) and seemed better. Today he is his usual playful, happy self, thank dog!
I wanted to put this out there so that people will be cautious if their dog is on the cusp with weights for pills. I can't be sure this is why he had the reaction, but I suspect this is why.

I'm glad to hear Theo is alright, what a scare! Did you happen to call the company that makes Trifexis to report his adverse reaction? (Elanco Animal Health at 1-888-545-5973) It's important for them to have the feedback, companies keep stats on these kinds of things. When my mpoo had a reaction to the topical flea and tick preventive Vectra 3-D I reported it both to my vet and the manufacturer. I do remember reading somewhere about a typoo having a reaction that sounds similar to what Theo experienced. Thanks for the heads up.

Please also report the adverse reaction to the FDA. I stay away from any product that has more than one function.

What do you mean about the product having more than one function?

It treats heatworm, intestinal parasites and fleas. I live in an area where I have to use heartworm meds and I do fecals to see if there is a reason to worm,
use flea treatments only if needed. Thats a whole lot of things to give at once. Just like most are realizing that minimal vaccination is enough and yearly 7 way vaccinations are over kill and have the potential to do more harm than good.

Dear Chagall's mom,
I called and reported it. The person I spoke to was helpful. They thought it was an overdose or a sensitivity.
Thank you for the #.

I'm sorry to hear about this Theo'sMom. Our vet just prescribed Trifexis today and Chagall's mom pointed me to this thread. Did you end up trying it again, or are you now using something else?

I spoke with the company that makes trifexis and i spoke with my vet, and my vet also spoke with the company. We've determined that theo, who is a little bit over 40 pounds, was overdosed when he was given the 40.1-60 pound dosage. The main lesson is that if your dog's weight is on the cusp between 2 doses, ask your vet and/or the company if s/he can take the lower dose. The rep I spoke with at the company said theo would've been covered under the 20-40 pound dose because it covers dogs up to 41.5 pounds.
Theo took 4 previous doses and did fine. My female, who weighs 38, takes the lower dose (20-40) and has been fine. Many people I know who go to my vet use it without a problem. Just be aware not to give your pup more than he/she needs.
Because theo had a reaction I won't use it with him.
