My Spoo is 1.5 years old and a very picky eater. He stayed healthy so far, but we discovered warms in his poop yesterday that definitely requires treatment. Bottom line is, that after several hours of trying, I was not able to feed him this pill: I used his favorite treat, meat, peanut butter- he is separating the pill from the meat, and just leaves it out. I crushed the pill, against my Vets advice, put it in peanut butter- did not help.
I have one pill left ( each one is $30.00), hate to waist it, but also , the most importantly, need to treat my pup- please advise!!!!

I assume you've not been shown how to out he pill on the back of the tongue, hold his muzzle and stroke his throat till it has been swallowed? I'd would ask your vet - or vet nurse - to give it to him, and show you. Failing that, and given how very expensive the pills are, I'd put it away in a safe place for a week, and play the scrummy-tablet game several times a day before trying again. Have a handful of really good treats, and give the dog a few one at a time. when he knows how good they are, gently open his mouth and pop one in. Repeat. Next session give him just one or two, then several by opening his mouth yourself. Work on it until he really likes the game, putting the occasional treat really well back on his tongue. When he is relaxed about this, hide the tablet in a piece of chicken, play the game with more chicken, and make sure the piece with the tablet goes to the back of his tongue - he should swallow it before realising there is anythin in it.

There are, I believe, spot-on and injectable wormers available - may be worth considering in future if he is tricky about pills!

I also have had much success with placing the pill inside a ball of peanut butter or cheese and place it at the back of the tongue. Then hold the muzzle gently closed and rub the nose and mouth while keeoing it closed with the other hand. Hope this helps!

Picky eaters can be a challenge. I had a pom that took $100 of meds a month and we would grind his pills, mix with canned dog food and give to him twice a day. What a pain!. With Max I decided on a different approach and taught him to take pills on the back of his tongue. So much easier and straight forward.

I try to make it fun for him and always reward with a high value treat after he takes the pill. Easy and quick for me, he likes it because he get a nice treat. We both get what we want!

This has always worked for me and my old vet showed me . Open mouth drop pill in as far back as you can close mouth of dog and hold muzzel then give him a good quick blow up his nose this has never failed me.We had a dog that could smell pills in anything and would starve himself rath then take his pills.

I also find it easier to get pills right down the back when Sisko is sitting - His neck extends way further and opens the throat and I hold him around his muzzle and just poke the pill right down. Then I hold his jaw shut and stroke his throat.

Glad you got the worming meds down! But if he had tapeworms, you need to have flea control too! I also live in S. Calif. and fleas are a yr round problem here.......Is your vet putting your dog on Comfortis? or a topical treatment? I hope so! Tapeworms come from fleas..........

Irene,

Glad you got the meds down at the vet. However, in future, if you should need to give meds more often or for longer periods of time, you should be able to do at home. I have used 2 methods with my spoo girl. What has worked for me best is just enclosing the pills in a very small bit of braunschweiger liverwurst. I just buy it in the supermarket in a roll, cut it up into portions, freeze and defrost as needed. I use this method every day to feed my girl her Glycoflex tabs, dogs are supposed to like them LOL, but she does not, so this works perfectly for her. The other method to pill a dog is just putting it down the back of the throat and I have done this with many dogs as well. It works when the dog is sitting or standing, just hold the head straight up in the air, open the mouth and put the meds as far back in the throat as possible and push down. Then, still holding the head up, stroke the throat. Usually will go down immediately. I have used this method with even fairly large pills without any issues.
