Default Sammy's knee surgery

Sammy had luxating patella surgery on his right knee a week ago on Thursday. We knew he had luxating patella in both knees when we got him as a puppy. He had left knee surgery three days before his first birthday in 2015. We knew in the last few months that something was bothering him, and after taking him in for a checkup the vet discovered that his right knee had pretty bad patellar luxating. It popped out with very little manipulation.

So on Thursday the 13th he had surgery. The vet deepened the groove and tightened some tendons to stabilize his knee. The first five days he had a fentanyl patch on for the pain, and his vetprofen pills,so he stayed pretty quiet and still. He didn't want to eat much except for some canned food once a day. He had the pain patch removed this last Wednesday, so almost two days ago now. He had a rough evening with pain, panting a lot. But after the vetprofen kicked in he slept all night and had a great day on Thursday, walking around a lot better, putting more weight on his leg, eating good, and even playing quietly with his toys!

The vet said surgery went well and he should recover good. He has to take it easy for six weeks. Hopefully we can keep him down for that long!

This is our third experience with knee surgery, since Sunny also had left knee surgery in 2012.

Thank you everyone! Trying to upload photo of his shaved leg but files are too big. So here's the Flickr page.

Glad to hear Sammy is doing well and hope his recovery isn't hard (for you LOL!) I have the greatest sympathy for anyone who has to keep a poodle 'quiet' LOL!

The stress level actually wasn't that bad this time around! He pretty much laid around for five days straight, sleeping and taking it easy. His worst day was the day they took off the fentanyl patch. He's walking on the leg really well now, and has resumed his normal eating habits, and his usual routine. He wants to start running and jumping again, though.
