Default Lia is sick =(

Hi All - Just wanted to run this past you to see if I can get any input on my current situation.........

Lia is a 7 month old standard, typically a happy and healthy puppy. This past Monday (it is now Friday), Lia started having some diarrhea. No change in her diet, she was eating normally and continues to - no loss of appetite or change in demeanor. She eats Merrick Puppy Plate (canned) mixed with Taste of the Wild puppy kibble. I had given her a bully stick on Saturday night (she has had these before with no problem) and she finished it up on Monday morning, and shortly after the diarrhea started. Could that be the trigger? Don't know. The diarrhea really wasn't bad so I waited it out until Tuesday thinking I would call the vet if it continued. Tuesday morning she went normally but it came back by her afternoon poop. I called the vet, they didn't think I necessarily needed to bring her in but did ask me to bring in a stool sample. Did that, it was normal and they gave me Hills Prescription I/D cans to feed her for a few days to calm her tummy and intestines down. So I take her off her normal food and start feeding this bland food.

Forward to Wednesday afternoon....she starts coughing. A hoarse hacking cough followed by what looks and sounds like her trying to get something that's stuck out of her throat, like she's trying to cough something up. Just a few episodes but one in the early evening was pretty bad. It had me concerned. Keep an eye on her Thursday morning in case I need to take her to the vet - nothing. And, her stools are getting back to normal too, although not 100% right, no diarrhea and it appears that is going away. Thursday afternoon the coughing starts up again and as the afternoon turns into evening, it's progressively getting worse. But about 10pm, she's really having coughing fits and seems uncomfortable, which is making me REALLY uncomfortable. How bad is this going to get? Will she be in trouble at 3am? Who knows!

So...since my vet is closed, I bring her to the 24 hour emergency vet and from all appearances and symptoms, the vet says she has kennel cough. She has been vaccinated but went to doggy day care last Friday so the timeline is right for exposure. She has no fever and when she isn't having a coughing episode, she's jumping all over the dr. having a grand old time in the exam room. Dr. puts her on Doxycycline. I did not give her a pill last night because we got home after midnight and it has to be given with food, figure I'll start her up in the morning. Dr. says the meds might cause diarrhea. Great, we're just getting over that and her intestines are probably still a bit irritated, certainly not 100% normal yet.

She has several fits of coughing during the night but not horrible and she seems to sleep ok (not me though!). Take her out this morning before breakfast, first part of her stool is ok then some diarrhea again. She hasn't even had the pill that might cause this yet! No idea why she has this - is it related to the kennel cough? Unrelated? Just a tummy bug? Was it that bully stick and if so, wouldn't that be out of her system by now? Ugh!

So now my poor little girl is coughing on and off AND has diarrhea again! I finished up the food the vet gave me at breakfast and had intended on starting her back on her regular food tonight but I guess at this point, I shouldn't do that.

I guess my questions is...should I get more of the prescription food from the vet, since that's what she's been eating (and gobbling it up like crazy!) and I wouldn't have to introduce something else new? Should I make her chicken and rice instead? She I start her back on her regular food and mix pumpkin in?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I can not help you but I wanted to send hugs to you and Lia. How scary for you. I hope she is back to her old self very soon. Poor baby girl.

Thank you, much appreciated!

Right after I typed that, guess I answered my own question as I went to the store and bought chicken, rice and pumpkin. I boiled the chicken, cooked the rice and have a few meals taken care of. I decided to give her a small lunch and smaller dinner so as not to give her too much at once. So she just ate some chicken and rice mixed with a little pumpkin - she loved it and was hungry too.

Guess we'll see how this goes, I do feel better giving her this food vs. the Hills Prescription I/D.

Those coughing fits, so hard to listen to. Reminds me of when my kids had croup and I had to take them into the bathroom with the shower full blast on hot to create steam! So glad those days are over!
