National Institutes of Health Study of Toe Cancer in the Black Standard Poodle

The Ostrander Laboratory at the National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH is conducting research on the genetic susceptibility to toe cancer (squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma of the digit) in the Standard Poodle. We are in the final stages of our study, and believe we are closing in on finding an associative mutation. For genetics studies such as this one, we require DNA and RNA from a modest number of individuals to confirm and replicate our results. For this reason we are soliciting DNA and RNA samples from any pedigreed solid black Standard Poodle. Eligible dogs can be 1) healthy OR affected with toe cancer; 2) can be any age; 3) must be solid black; 4) must be AKC registered or eligible for registration.

The collection packet we will provide you at no cost contains both a Saliva DNA kit and Cheek Swab RNA kit. They will arrive in cardboard mailers with consent forms, special tubes for sample collection and easy to follow instructions. Sample collection can be done by you in your own home. After collection, the packet can be returned by regular mail with the filled-out consent forms, a copy of the dog's three generation pedigree and the samples in the cardboard mailer to protect the tubes during shipping.

If your dog meets our criteria and you are interested in participating or if you have donated to us before, please email me at poodles@mail.nih.gov or call 301-496-7817.

Thank you so much for supporting canine health research!

Sincerely,
