These collars may or may not help with your situation. Matting can be caused from a number of different things. Coat change, petting the dog, not drying the hair straight around the neck, scratching, not being groomed often enough etc and it's just a downright common place to get mats in. Most likely your biggest culprit is from the nylon collar having places where it can snag the hair. Having worked as a groomer for years I frequently saw poodles with mats around their necks who wore collars all the time. I think your best option would be to just simply take the collar off of your dog when it doesn't need to wear one. See if that helps. As far as soft collars go, I find them to be much more gentle on the hair as they do not have edges that could snag it. In answer to your question I would say, "Yes" they would most likely help prevent it better than most collars." However, if left on for long extended periods of time I'm sure they could possibly cause matting due to constant rubbing on the coat which would be similar to a dog wearing a sweater etc. I don't ever recommend leaving any type of collar on a show coat.
