Fantastic Skylar and Babykins - so impressed that you did so well with the unfamiliar or untried before. What great teamwork. Congratulations.

The club where I train for Obedience decided 3 weeks ago that they would test dogs for the new AKC Trick titles. I looked over the check lists and realized that Babykins could easily pass the Novice and probably the Advanced - so I added a few more tricks for Intermediate and this morning we headed over for testing.

The person testing for Novice really didn't know what she was doing - she laid out some equipment in the ring and was refusing to let anyone take their own props in to be used in testing. She wanted the dog to do what she laid out - and not choose from the list on the check list. When I saw that I was scared - but I just went in with my dog. Babykins was such a good girl that she followed my requests. So instead of putting two paws on her pivot bowl, she had to put two paws on a set of stairs - I was so afraid when I said up she would climb up to the top - but she did what they wanted.

The intermediate and advanced were in their agility building where we had never been. Second on our list was fetch. Babykins zoomed with her toy in her mouth but she came nicely into front when I called her.....with her toy thank goodness. Silly dog. My dog may be a poodle, but she was not a natural retriever - it took me a year to get her to fetch and return a toy to my hand. When we did the weave poles, she then went and ran up their A frame - in a steep position where it was placed next to the wall out of the way - OMG she has never been on an A frame - well she ran up and then down the other side - so now I know she can do the A frame. I was also proud that she did their wobble board which was far more wobbly than the one where we train - her fear of the wobble board held us back in the first agility class three times - I think she has conquered the wobble board. There were some other challenges and we overcame all of them.

I'm so glad I did this - because it revealed to me that my bond with my dog was very strong and I'm proud that we were able to achieve these titles.

Congratulations, that is so huge!!!!!

It was fun to do and I believe that many of the members here can do these tricks with their dog. And there is a feeling of satisfaction of having trained quite of few of these tricks on my own.

Thanks. I think having done this is actually helping Obedience because I feel more confident in my training ability and Babykin is picking up that confidence.

Absolutely, the better you feel about what you are doing the more relaxed and able to feel happy while working your dog will be. This is why I think everyone should train as if they want to show in a performance sport even if they never go to a trial. It is such a great way to deeply enrich your relationship with your dog. At the end of The Art of Raising a Puppy, the Monks of New Skete talk about transformative relationships between people and dogs and how powerful those relationships can be. While one might disagree with some of the Monks methodologies described in this book, they are spot on in that idea of transforming yourself in your relationship with that special dog. I know that each of the relationships I have with our dogs has done something powerful to change me as a person (and for the better).
