Hello from Mom of two mini poodles
Hello Everyone,
I found this site quite by accident, and after reading through a few of the postings, figured that this would be a really great way to connect with other poodle owners. I have 2 poodles, a white miniature male that is two years old, Cooper, and a new puppy, Rollie, who is also a male,black,and five months old. I have been a poodle lover my whole life, and having these two little guys around is just a great experience. I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone, and tapping into the knowledge that everyone shares so freely! |

Hello,
Thanks so much for welcoming me to this forum. I'll upload pictures as soon as I can. In the meantime, I do have a problem/question going on with my two boys that I was wondering if you all can help me with...Rollie, our pup, has been with us for 7 weeks now, and our older male Cooper can't stand him! I introduced them slowly, have kept them apart when things get too heated, and Cooper still refuses to warm up to the pup. In fact, just today, I saw him intimidating the pup through the back door window, when Rollie was trying to find a place to "do his business". I spoke to the vet about it, since I am afraid that Cooper is going to injure Rollie, (whenever Cooper has a chance the fangs come out, and he's bitten Rollie a couple of times), and our vet is recommending medication to kind of "mellow" Cooper out. In truth, Cooper has never had a good temperment, and should probably be the only dog in the house. Even as a puppy he was very skittish and stand-offish, not very warm or playful. Despite my best efforts at socialization and training, he has grown into a two year old who is prone to growling and nipping my five year old son, and even my husband from time to time. He gets strongly reprimanded when he does this, and never gets away with it, but nevertheless tries, which makes me feel that it is in his nature, and will always be a part of him. So, where does that leave me with the new puppy? Rollie is a wonderful puppy, and very full of the poodle "joie de vivre". He is an absolute joy, and is very well balanced and friendly; he's got a great temperment, which is why I bought him. Has anyone had issues with a difficult poodle, and has medication helped? I expected Cooper to be reserved with the new puppy, but not flat out hostile, and that's exactly what he is. I have to worry that I am ultimately harming Rollie by keeping him here. Welcome! I can't wait to see pictures of your minis!
As far as the situation with Cooper and Rollie goes...maybe there is a trainer in your area to help you out? I know that many dogs can totally be turned around with the proper training. If he is nipping your child and husband he definitely needs something done. I think I would try training before medicating. That's is just my personal choice though. |

Hello and welcome. I definately agree with going with a trainer before decided on medication. Thats too bad that Cooper is being a stinker to the new arrival, Rollie. I really hope your able to get Cooper's attitude stable so the whole family can enjoy both Poodles. Sounds like Rollie is going to be a great dog and you don't want to miss out on that because of Cooper's attitude. I hope your able to find a good trainer and its successful.

Yep I'd go for the training first, once the trainer has seen him he might recommend medication at the same time. I had Locky (our GSD) on some Clomicalm as he has seperation anxiety and was jumping more than 6 foot fences as soon as we left the house and I don't think it made an ounce of difference to him. We took him off it. Now we've moved house and got the poo Locky is so much happier wish we could have done this years ago!
