My daughter has been asking for a poodle for awhile..and my husband and I finally have considered getting one. At first we thought about a smaller but we're considered a standard...he likes bigger dogs and i like them a bit more as well. I figured a breeder would be able to answer any of my questions but I found this site through a few google searches and figured it can't hurt to ask.
My daughter is 8 years old, do you think a standard would be "too much" dog for her? I know they are high energy..my husband and I are both very active..he's works in law enforcement and I'm a stay at home mother and my daughter is home schooled so there is someone here often.
I also had questions about colors of standard poodles. I have seem some that are two different colors usually black and white. I know color isnt important but I am curious. Someone also said they can be brown and white but I have never seen one, so is that true?
My husband also mentioned some of the doodle mixes. I think a standard poodle comes across to him as a girls dog but he's willing to get one. I was just curious about some of the doodle dogs I hear about. I have mostly heard negative things about temperment and consdiering how young my daughter is a stable pet is my first priority.
Also I live near Seattle, Washington if anyone has breeder suggestions.
I don't have any breeder suggestions
but what you're looking for is called a Parti standard they can come in a huge variety of colours brown/white, black/white, black with ticking, brown with ticking
and now onto doodles...lol XD
we may be a bit biased on that subject here but we only state the facts
you can't get an even temperament from doodle...its just too hard to say what the dog will be like even with obedience classes
they shed ((We have one and we had to buy this weird lint roller thing because our hardwood floors look black...all the time v.v; ))
and the coat is never the same even from within the same litter
now if he thinks the standard pet clip, or continental clip is to prissy you could always keep the face and feet of your poodle longer
we let Elphies grow out a bit...because I don't groom her myself
I have to say that I cannot stand a man that will call any dog a "girls" dog. That's just ridiculous. If you don't want to own a certain dog because it doesn't appeal to you fine but honestly most dogs respond better to a man's voice than a woman's no matter what the breed.
Anyway, I'd say if you really want your 8 year old to help in taking care of the dog, you might look to a mini. They are in the middle and they make great family pets. Standards are wonderful but they are a ton of work and not something I'd say an 8 year old would be prepared to deal with.
As far as doodles. There is no point. The standard poodle is a great breed with wonderful qualities. Those don't need to be muddled through breeding into the lab or golden retriever. I'd say avoid doodles.
Hello and welcome
We have had dogs in the past, mostly rescue mixed breeds, labs predominant, and now have our first standard poodle. I have to say that I am very impressed by our puppy's intelligence- he is just 15 weeks, yet has learned so many commands and the rules of the house (like, no biting family members He is very active, he would love to be playing all day and running, going places. He is not fond of the car but he just wants to be with us, so he goes if he HAS to ! He lays down at my feet when I am busy studying or on the computer, and chews on a bone in the kitchen while I cook or clean. We homeschool our 6 year old too, and during school he rests in his crate, no problem. We take him out to do his business every couple of hours during the day and after meals, we now have very few accidents in the house, and when they occur it is always OUR fault because we were not alert enough.
About macho-ness, well, my husband enjoys taking Sam out, people always ask what kind of dog is that? And are surprised that he is a poodle, because of his coloring. They run together and enjoy some controlled rough-housing too He doesn't feel like Sam is sissy at all, if anything he is all boy, rough and tough! And we keep his coat short, no poms.
I agree about doodles, you will be much better off if you choose a proven breed with great parents.
Please let us know if you have any more questions, we are all in love with this breed and love to share !
I think your daughter would do just fine with a Standard Poodle. My life has been shared with Standards since the age of seven and have never been over powered by one or knocked over by one. It is up to you to set boundaries with both the pup and you daughter, and let a pup know right from day one what you will and will not tolerate.
You are speaking of parti-coloured Poodles. There are a few parti breeders here on the forum. If I am not mistaken Tintlet has partis. You may want to PM her. They come in all sorts of colour combos...black and white, silver and white, brown and white, brown and cream, sable, brindle... Karen Sisco at Sisco Poodles also has partis.
I agree - I am new to Spoos and with good training and time poodles are just the best dogs. They can be high energy, but neither of mine are high energy. They just have their moments - and good exercise will cure the sparks of energy.
Also here is the website Arreau was speaking about IF you were interested in Parti's www.tinlet.com. Gloria is wonderful AND she has a litter on the way, I am not sure if they are all spoken for or not. Also, I think it is blue, black and silver.
And I think your husband will fall in love. There are many men out there that think this, and end up being diehard poodle lovers.
Poodles are athletic and SO smart, and make the best companians.
If your husband thinks that a doodle is more manly, go to the pound and find a poodle mix. They are usually easy to spot because they are overgrown, matted, nasty-looking things. Take him home, have him shaved (he'll be pretty ugly for a while) and you'll have yourself a doodle without the $1200 expense.
I think this is a nice cut if you want to make a standard poodle look a little more masculine
My 9 month old Spoo is a little much for my 6 year old boy because my boy plays rough with him and he plays rough back so I have to monitor their play continuously.....
Welcome to the Poodle Forum! Hope you find some answers here to help you make your decision on a pet that will likely be with you for the next dozen years or so!
I am rather a newbie to poodles. My (then 18-year-old) daughter brought home a standard poodle puppy about 1 1/2 years ago and her dad and I were SOOOO impressed with this puppy (who was poorly bred by a backyard "breeder", btw... can you imagine how impressed we would've been with a nicely bred pup??); her intelligence, willingess to please, quickness of training, etc... that we had to have one of our own and we brought Lucybug home from ArreauStandardPoodles (who is a member here) last October. Katy's puppy is now close to 18 months old and Lucy is almost 8 months old... I don't believe I will EVER be without a standard poodle in my life from now on!!
Our backyard neighbors have a 3 year old girl and a 1 1/2 year old boy and they BEG to be lifted over the fence to run in our yard with the spoos!! The dogs love to chase them, and then the kids chase the dogs in turn. Neither child has ever been knocked over by the dogs and the dogs love the interaction as much as the kids do!! Of course, these kids don't LIVE with my dogs, nor have to take them for walks and such, but there hasn't been a time this spring that we've been outside at the same time as the neighbors that those kids haven't wanted to jump the fence into the pack of poodles on the other side!!
We are taking both girls to obedience classes - we've just finished week 4 of a 6 week class and I would have to say that after just those few classes and regular refresher training at home; any eight year old would be able to walk either of our girls on a loose leash at an imperfect "heel" position. (I say imperfect because WE haven't been particular enough about this yet... As long as the girls stay somewhere beside us on a loose leash, we're satisfied. If we ever decide to compete in obedience, we'll have to become more critical about proper position)
You can also find standard poodles in differing sizes within the variety. Katy's pup, Chalumeau, is only about 18 inches at the shoulder, while Lucy is at least 23. I haven't weighed Meau lately, but I'd have to say she's in the 35-38 lb range and when we had Lucybug spayed 2 1/2 weeks ago she was right at 41 pounds. IMO that isn't huge and should be very handleable by an 8 year old...
All that being said... while I feel the right standard poodle, with the right training and socialization would be fine with a child, so would a mini - the choice would be yours as far as what you are looking for in that pet who will be with you for many happy healthy years to come!
ps... I agree about the doodles!! If you decide you want one of those, find a rescue!! Don't pay the "breeders" of these mutts top dollar when you can get one for a fraction of the price and save a life in the process! Petfinder.com ALWAYS has tons of doodles looking for good homes!
Good luck in your pet procurement process! Hope you find just what you're looking for!
My standards range from 39 to 65 lbs. My biggest is a female and my smallest is my unneutered male. He is the gentlest thing, doesn't bowl people over and can stand on his back legs and just touch you with his front paws....light as a feather.
In my opinion, I generally think standards are ALOT of dog...especially for an 8 year old. However, I feel that in YOUR situation, it would work out fine. You are a stay-at-home mom and you homeschool....double points in my book. My daugher did a huge report on grooming poodles BEFORE we owned one. She had to learn everything but we did buy our first poodle along with clippers, dryer, table etc. She had library books as well as real grooming books. So my point is, you are in a position to teach her that this is a very special breed. She began grooming and got her NCMG title at age 19. Tell your daughter that she can earn major money being a groomer and especially one who is particularly good at grooming poodles. Not everyone can do it well.
I hate to say this, but most doodles are idiot dogs. Pulling, panting, struggling, shedding, slobbering, water-bowl-splashing, spastic big bundles of energy. NO THANKS....give me a real standard poodle any day.
I wanted to share that my 10 month old Standard Poodle is constantly being lead around the yard on leash by 2 and 3 years olds!! I have a home daycare and this dog is amazing with my daycare kids! We set proper guidelines from the start and now he just knows how to behave (and so do the kids).
He is a well bred dog from a breeder who has donated pups to the seeing eye dog programs in our area because of how calm and laid back they are... just make sure you research your breeder and you won't be disappointed! A Standard is totally fine for an 8 year old, in my opinion, the best choice! (but I'm biased!)
An 8 yr old girl can absolutely handle a Standard Poodle, but you will need to choose your breeder wisely and get a puppy who is good match for your family.
I encourage you to become an educated buyer before taking the plunge and bringing a puppy home. Spend some time learning about correct Poodle temperament and type so that you will have a better idea if a breeder has good dogs or not. Read up on health issues in our breed. Understand what health testing should be done on breeding Poodles before they are bred. With most good breeders you will typically need to be on a wait list for a puppy so plan accordingly. Don't be an impulse buyer!!!!!
RE Colors.... Poodles come in a variety of colors. The AKC recognized colors are: Black, Cream, White, Blue, Brown, Cafe, Silver, Silver Beige, Apricot and Red. Poodles also come in multi colors: Parti, Phantom, Sable and Brindle. Since these multi colors are considered disqualifying faults in AKC, they are often bred by unscrupulous or inexperienced breeders who are looking to make a quick buck on "rare" colors. Tread carefully if considering these colors. I agree that Tintlet Poodles can help you there.
RE Poodles as sissy dogs.... I grew up with a Doberman. I have had a German bred German Shepherd Dog out of Schutzhund lines. I can definitively say that my Standards are butch enough for even the manliest man. They are extraordinarily athletic, highly trainable, and protective.
As for Doodles..... I would put my Poodle up any day any time against a Doodle. I've never seen a Doodle who could hold a candle to my Poodles.
